Haiti Travel

->> Hi everyone,

A writer and I had planned on doing a piece on Haiti and UCLA connections prior to the earthquake, and I have some quick questions about travel conditions/hotels. Because of the earthquake, we've been having trouble keeping in consistent contact with our sources in both Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.

We have plans to fly into Santo Domingo and travel to Elias Pinas, DR and Banica, Haiti. Our contact in Port-au-Prince isn't completely sure what her situation will be when we go (mid june or august) so any help you guys can provide will be much appreciated.

What's the hotel, transportation, food, and safety situation like now, and will it get better by the time we travel?

Also, what are your suggestions for travel insurance?

Thank you so much!

->> Check the state department web site. Even before the earthquake Haiti was considered a very dangerous place.

->> Hello Tiffany. There are often topics and threads about conditions in Haiti over at www.lightstalkers.org. I would check there for information. There are also people on there who have been there recently that you could contact for information. I'd also start a thread and I'm sure you'd get some helpful answers. Good luck!

->> tiffany, in all honesty, it's only february...you're talking about four to six months away from now. I think any and all information you get at this time will certainly be pretty much useless. point in fact, you will most probably be able to fly directly into port-au-prince if you are going in june/august. I heard american airlines is starting up commercial flights within the next couple of weeks. good luck to you.

->> Tiffany,

I'd agree with Chuck....that's a long way away. When I was on the ground in Port-au-Prince on my very brief trip, I heard directly from the official who was dealing with the incoming pilots on the tarmac of the airport. When he spoke to my pilot and said that Port-au-Prince Airport was trying to get back to normal operations. Obviously the place is hectic with relief supplies being dropped, but the official defiantly was stern and said the organization's next trip down would require jumping through more regularity loops...documentation of the supplies they're dropping off, prices, etc.

That being said, I'd imagine that 4 months from now they'll have things a bit more "together" and operational by the time you make it in. Hopefully they do, they need it.

Robert
