Tiger Woods/Getty Images Screws the Paparazzi

It was the holy grail -- the most sought after image in the world -- but when the first image of Tiger Woods was released through Getty Images yesterday, the move blocked the paparazzi from their million dollar shot.
Tiger Woods Photo
TMZ has checked around with some major paparazzi agencies, who tell us the first picture of Tiger could have scored them more than $1,000,000 in worldwide distribution profits.
But when the image was released through Getty Images -- a non-paparazzi, subscription-based photo agency -- the value of the photo plummeted ... as most major media outlets got the pic essentially for free as part of their deal with Getty.
FYI -- Just 24 days before the shot was taken, Getty had announced a "multi-year" deal with the PGA, in which both sides touted the move as a "strategic partnership." Turns out, they were right. |

->> I'm trying to wrap my head around who I would like to see screwed more, Getty images or the Paparazzi.
I think I'll go with Getty since at least the Paparazzi seem to know the value of images, where Getty does not. |

| ->> This was clearly *very* deliberate and controlled. Not surprising, considering it's Tiger, the PGA and Getty. Makes perfect sense for them. |

| ->> It had to be staged, and the photographer pre-selected...what's the most any Getty photographer could make for any photo? What loyalty does the average guy using his own equipment for a non-credentialed photo have for Getty? Most people claim their "wife" or "mom" took the pic and sell it to the Enquirer. |

->> A boring picture of Tiger jogging with a friend, even after all that's gone on, would probably have been worth only a few hundred dollars, even if shot by a "paparazzi."
If someone had a picture - a non-planned photo - of Tiger with his kids or Elin, or with another woman, or a broken face, that's when the money would have gotten ridiculous. |

| ->> FYI, Sam Greenwood is a great guy and photographer who lives close to TPC Sawgrass who covered and shot golf around the world for golf magazines until Getty picked him up and now covers a variety of pro sports. He is provided a full set of Nikon and Canon equipment by Getty. Just thought I'd post that before anyone said anything unkind about Sam. |

Was this ever disclosed? I think any reputable newspaper would've like to known that this was staged. |

->> Celebs/Publicist control their visual content distribution often with various wire services as well. (don't forget that WireImage is now under the Getty umbrella too).
They might have gotten it even cheaper from Getty if they used one of these coupons. The race just got faster to the bottom............

->> I'm curious to see who ends up using these pictures, and whether or not the conditions under which they are shot are mentioned.
Then again, does it matter to a viewer or editor how these photos came about? From a journalistic perspective I certainly think it does, but will a viewer care, or do they just wanna see a picture of Tiger with a golf club in his hand, regardless if it was set up or not? |

->> This story has to make you feel all warm and fuzzy on the innerds. TMZ's paparazzi photo, is a photo of a photographer photographing Tiger Woods, and the "breaking news" they're disseminating is that the pic was staged...America should rise up and rebel against craziness!
Getty better look out...TMZ's gonna exact some revenge (or at least create enough newsworthy photos to compensate for their loss) |
