Speedlight Kit Case Suggestions
Peter Madia, Photographer, Assistant

->> Anybody have any suggestions for cases for a speedlight kit? I am tired of changing my main bag when I need to shoot a portrait with lights and would rather just have a case/bag dedicated to my speedlights, accessories and pocket wizards. I am looking to put 6-8 speedlights, pocket wizards, cables, accessories, mounting components, etc in the case. Some cases I have looked into a little bit are Pelican, Kata, Versaflex. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks.

->> Peter I just went through a similar exercise, trying to fit my strobes and accessories into various combinations of my excess camera bags.

The best solution ended up being to use my old Lowepro photo backpack. I had given up on the backpack a while ago for carrying camera stuff because it's so hard to access things on the fly, but with lighting gear you don't really need to access anything until you arrive on location.

Backpacks give you a fairly flat configuration, so when they are lying on the ground and unzipped it's easy to see and access everything. Plus the backpacks often have a means to carry a tripod, which doubles as a way to carry light stands.

And just to mention the obvious, a backpack frees up your hands and shoulders for carrying other stuff.

My Mini Trekker was the right size for two big strobes (285 size) and a handful of smaller slaves, plus accessories. I'm guessing a size up from the mini would suit you.

->> Pete,

I really like the flexibility of the Pelican case. Let me know if you find one you like. I am a distributor of them through my AED business and will get you one at cost. That would be a huge savings off the posted retail price.

Let me know if you go that route.

If anyone else is looking at those, you can contact me and I can see what my cost is and pass that along to any sportsshooter.com member.

Just a thought. We all need to save $$, right?

->> FYI - my speedlight case is a Pelican 1510 (And Jason's offer makes things easy)
I have the dividers also.

I can carry two 580's, a JackRabbit pack, 2 PW Flex tt5s, a mini TT1, 2 small slide boxes filled with AA batteries and lightstand connectors,2 Honl grids, an assortment of Honl snoots, two small Manfrotto lightstands, 3, swivel mounts, three 24" umbrellas, a speed ring, a photoflex small and mini softbox and a small assortment of cables and hooks. And that configuration can go as carryon if you're traveling and is rarely searched.

My regular bag has another Jackrabbitt pack and a 580EXII and if I'm island hopping and need to be sure that I have things covered for shoots I'm heading to then I also have a small backpack that carries a Lastolite 18" softbox, Lastolite Trigrip with several different covers, a 42" - 5 in 1 round reflector kit from Photoflex and a Bogen magic arm.

Not sure if you could fit 6-8 speedlites - two of my compartments carry the Honl grid and you could prob fit 2 in those, leave out the slideboxes with AA's and you'll have space for another 580 and the spot that carries the PWs could take another speedlight. You'd be good at 6 but looking for space for two more unless you didn't need the Jackrabbit slot.

Hope that helps

->> Peter,

depending on budget, I just bought one of these and am very happy so far.
The red interior helps you see the little black chords and pieces that get "lost" in
black bags.

Photoflex Transpac Single Light Kit Case, Internal Dimensions 34" x 10.5" x 10.5" (86.4 x 26.7 x 26.7cm)

http://www.adorama.com/PFTKCSS.html?sid=1266498885367785

there are other versions (larger) depending on what all you want to stuff inside!

Questions... let me know, Shaun

->> Pelican 1620 w dividers: (there is an optional lid organizer available.)

2 AB800's, 4 multi-max's, 2 7" reflectors, 2 speedlights, 2 1d sized bodies, 70-200 & 17-40 with shades, 2 swivel heads, 3 super clamps, lots of batteries, cords, cables for power and camera/flash functionality, studs....

It holds a whole lot.

Drawbacks - won't hold my stands or 11" reflectors. Empty it weighs 20lbs. I'm too chicken to weigh it full, but I can still lift it into my truck.

->> To add a possibility -

I have a hard case that I bought on eBay for a song that arrived with foam pre-cut to fit who knows what.
I bought a piece of 6" foam at JoAnn Fabric, laid the stuff on top until I came to an arrangement that worked, drew the shape of the wells with a sharpie and went at it with an electric carving knife. Wrap the thing in gaff tape and I had an ugly but cheap and serviceable insert with no slop.
Add that to Jason's Pelican offer and you've got a a winner.

->> My lighting bag is an old Wilson tennis bag with two main compartments.

First compartment has umbrellas and light stands (all on the smallish side).

Second compartment has a padded Domke insert that perfectly holds up to 4 speedlights, and all the cables and other junk goes in the rest of the compartment.

->> Last year I made a change to my setup. I decided that I wanted to use only one bag for outdoor and indoor sports as well as portrait work.

My main bag is a Think Tank Airport Security Roller that goes everywhere I go. The only other bag is a Think Tank Glass Taxi that is used for storage. When I'm shooting outdoors, all of my lights and extra PW's are placed in the Glass Taxi. When shooting indoors, the 2.8L 400IS is placed in the Glass Taxi.

I do carry a small grip bag or a stand bag when using my lights.

Here's a link to the two setups. I'm pretty happy with both.
