not just sidelines but basketball too

->> So, for those that shoot the NBA, are the baselines becoming over-crowded too? Here's some text from another forum. Seen lots of discussion about overcrowded sidelines, but how are things at the NBA? And yes, I am still assuming the Nets are part of the NBA. So, can we answer with that assumption in mind?
"
Hi all,
My lovely wife gave me an awesome Valentines gift. I will be the team photographer for the NJ Nets basketball team for 1 game against the Chicago Bulls. I'm excited and nervous at the same time.
My question is, which lens do you guys recommend ? I'm willing to purchase 1 more lens for my arsenal. The game is indoors of course, the arena is pretty well lit.
My gear right now:
40D
50 1.8
10-22
18-55is
55-250is
50-500 Sigma
100macro 2.8
580 exII flash
Any suggestions will be great. " |

| ->> I'd recommend the 85mm f/1.8. None of those zooms are going to cut it, and the 50's af is too slow. The 50mm f/1.4 is probably an even better option on your 1.6x crop body, but I'll assume you don't want to buy a second 50mm. |

->> Ah. I need a lesson in reading carefully. And here I thought I was being helpful.
I wonder if this "opportunity" is just a plan the Nets have to get people to pay them to provide a service. Genius.. |

I wonder if I tried shooting from the nose bleed seats with the 300-800 if I would be asked to leave. |

->> I have been to a couple of Indiana Pacers games this year. The suck as well but nothing like the Nets. Both games were against other teams that suck and there was enough empty photo slots you could have shot laying down sideways and still had a spot on either side of you.
The only time the photo spots fill up is if there is a good team in town. |

Give the guy some credit. He'll be at f11 1/30th ISO 1600. He'll also use his flash on camera(set to ETTL) and bouncing it off the stadium ceiling.
He should be just fine. (insert smile face here) |

Why not, half the posts on this site are along the same lines. What settings, what price to charge etc... what's so wrong with that?
You guys sure like to pile on... |

->> First question: What did any of the people who are poking fun at this guy do for their SO for Valentines? Or your SO for you?
Second question: Does it make you feel better to pick on someone who is getting to have a great experience at many people's "dream job?" Yeah, he's probably not as skilled as some people on this board, but does he really need to be ridiculed for asking for some tips on how to make the most of a potentially once-in-a-lifetime-for-him opportunity?
Third question: Are some elements of this community really that insecure about their photographic skills and/or their ability to make a decent living with said skills that mocking someone who is asking for assistance seems like a good way to boost your own ego?
This is probably one of the lamest threads I've seen in a long time. |

->> If the info I found online is correct this is a COURSE where they're paying $950 for a one on one class in sports photography, parking, meals, and then shadowing the team photographer a bit during the game. So, what's the difference between this and say the Sports Shooter Academy (except you get a lot more bang for your buck with the SSA)?
It even looks like he keeps the rights instead of this being some kind of rights grabbing experience. So overall, don't really see a problem in how it's set up unless there's some fine print that isn't public. |

->> Agreed Jack. I would like to think that a good photographer could get their story told no matter how crowded the sidelines/baseline got. Sure, having your normal routine upset by having people there that "shouldn't" be there might be annoying, but you have to play with the cards that are dealt.
And if anyone wants to extrapolate this situation into having the "photographer's holy zone" populated by contest winners, GWC's and doners/boosters, zip it because it ain't gonna happen. |

Can't say that I agree with you on this one, Sam. The OP asked the question: this is happening elsewhere, is it happening to the NBA too? And it IS happening in plenty of other places. |

| ->> Have you seen the Net's sidelines? Last game I saw there were two photographers and two video guys. The cheerleaders outnumbered them. I seriously doubt putting a guy in there is going to crowd anyone. And I agree with Jack - why is everyone coming down on this guy? Blame the team and fire off the hate emails to them. I'm sure he's well aware that is isn't wanted down there, but that's still a really cool Valentine's Day present - even if it is the Nets :) |

->> On a slightly more serious note, if Mike J is correct the Tampa Bay Lightning did something similar. At our big annual event for the team's charity foundation we auctioned off a "photographer for a day", and it raised a significant amount of money.
The winning bidder will get a chance to see 'behind the scenes' of shooting a game, a how-to/a chance to help in setting the goal cam and strobes, a bit of a tutorial on shooting hockey, a shooting spot for the game and a review of photos after...not to mention all the hospitality Scott Audette can muster.
The past couple of years it's been mainly a huge fan who's had the opportunity at a game that would likely be lightly covered by the media - not really someone looking to steal anyone's gig - it's given them some great keepsake photos, good for fan PR...and it's raised significant money for the pediatric center at Tampa General Hospital, among other charities. |

| ->> I thought I might jump back in the thread I started. It was NOT my intention to attack the person who has this opportunity. I can see that not editing the cut/paste job to remove his gear was a bad decision. The whole purpose was to find out what people who actually work the baselines think of this type of thing and whether it has an impact. People on this site who shoot NFL / NCAA football have been loud and vocal the sidelines are overcrowded. I was simply curious if there is a sense from people that the court is becoming overcrowded as well. For those of you who actually addressed the question of whether the courts are getting crowded thank you for your responses. I am sorry the original post was not more clear as to the purpose. |
