Photomechanic help

->> I'm trying to label entire folders of unmarked images with the same basic IPTC info. I'm inside the folder, do "select all" and then apply the stationary pad I have saved. For some reason, there are always several random images in the folder that won't get labeled. No matter how many times I try, it just won't stick for some of them. They are not file protected, so I don't know what the deal is. And it's really annoying, because I have to check every single one to see if it took or not, which defeats the whole purpose of the batch process. I used to use Fotostation, which seemed to make more sense to me, and had more options to my liking.

I'm probably doing it all wrong any way. I have never been able to find a decent tutorial on how to use this stuff, so I'm just trying to learn a little bit at a time. Is there a Photo mechanic for dummies tutorial somewhere out there for marking hundreds of photos all at once?

->> Seems like something strange is happening with your system. I would post a message for Kirk over at the Camera Bits forum.

In the meantime, you can set a tag that shows you which images have been captioned by setting a label in the preferences.

- Open preferences
- Under the Contact sheet tab set the Labels dropdown to Filename + one Label
- Set Lable 1 to {caption} (include the brackets)

This will show the first few words of the caption, so you'll know which ones the IPTC info got. Also, while you're in the preferences, fool around with the IPTC/XMP settings. You might want to hit the restore defaults button to make sure you didn't get something funky in there. Kirk will help you with that stuff.

->> Camerabits is a very effective program. Do go to the forums or just ask Kirk. I have used this program from the beginning. When I get stuck, I call and they answer the phone, address the issue and I have an answer RIGHT NOW. They are some of the best people. Don't weaken.
The forums are really helpful. But they will talk to you and give you an answer on the spot. There is no three day wait. John

There is a manual here if it helps :

Very informative though also very long. Well worth a read.

I have to agree with the others though about the service. I have had answers on the forum from the Camerabits team within 30 minutes of asking.

I recently had a specific problem affecting an aspect of my workflow though probably that of few if any other users. 5 hours later I not only had an explanation but Kirk had added the solution to the latest beta and forwarded it to me to test !!

->> Just curious...

What OS are you running PM in? I've had some strange behavior using PM in Snow Leopard. Camera Bits are aware of some of the issues... Unfortunately, the issues I am experiencing are Apple related within PM, so I am at the mercy of Apple's updates.

->> Ron....I just posted on a different PM forum that the new update (well, I just saw it, so it's new to me) is 4.6.3 and is supposed to fix ingest problems for those of us who have updated to Snow Leopard. Mayhaps its also a fix for this problem? There's a long list of new featurs/fixed features in the ReadMe file (PDF) that comes with the 4.6.3 update.
