->> Does anyone use Mozy to back up their files? Is it really unlimited storage at $4.95 a month?
How is it?
Any problems?
I have Photoshelter, but I also want an off-site alternative to hard drives. One accessible online.
thanks,
Armando |

->> Armando, check the terms of service. I believe they mention personal use only, so your images that are part of your business would not be allowed. Would they ever know? Probably not, but they could say that you were being excessive in storage usage and kick you.
Crashplan is an application (both free/paid) as well as an online service. The online service has TOS like Mozy's but the application allows you create a backup through your network (to another computer) or to someone you know online (say at a friends house). Best part? You can start a backup locally, to an external drive, then take it over to a friends, and connect that as your online backup.
If you want online, for business, the only option I've found is Backblaze. They will backup external drives, have no problems with several terabytes of storage, etc. You can download or have them deliver files you need restored. But, you can't send them files to start your backup, you just have to upload until you got it all backed up.
I'd say perhaps both Crashplan and Backblaze could work. I'd use Crashplan to start a backup to an external, take it to a friends, then use that as a way to jumpstart my backup. Meanwhile Backblaze starts its own upload... which could take days/months/years to finish (not kidding)

->> Thanks Max, I'll check out the terms of Service and hopefully talk to a human before I make a decision. If anyone uses a service like Mozy to basically babysit files away from home let me know.
Thanks |

->> Dave, I have Carbonite and would not recommend them for a large amount of files. I tried to backup my laptop and after weeks it was still not done and it is only a 500GB hard drive.
There were some problems with it working with snow leopard but that is fixed now. It is just way to slow for me.
I looked at Mozy too and that seems much faster, not sure if we could use the personal one.
Hey Max, what's going on? |

| ->> I don't know anything about Mozy but I have used Carbonite for several years on 9 different systems and have never had any problems or issues. It is slow the first time you run a backup but after that it runs without a problem. It seems to help speed up the first run if you plug the computer into a cat5 as opposed to running via wifi but after that there is no problems. File recovery is fast and easy. |

->> I strongly advise against using Mozy or any related "unlimited" online backup service for backing up your photo archive. Last year, I was traveling for 3 months, and decided to subscribe and let Mozy take a shot at uploading my stuff. After 2 months of continuous uploading, it had uploaded 300 GB (of the 1.5 TB I threw at it), and I was happy.
BUT -- when I got home, I restarted my computer (since it hadn't been restarted in months). The Mozy software loaded before my external hard drive could mount (probably just a few seconds before), and the software thought I deleted the files from my computer, since it couldn't find them. So what did Mozy do? They instantly deleted the entire 300 GB I had uploaded so far. No chance to restore. My files were simply gone. I contacted them and they confirmed that I was S.O.L.
On the other hand, I have my father set up with a free account (limited to 2 GB) on his laptop, just to keep a backup of his photos (he has a point and shoot and takes maybe 20 photos a month). I'm sure Mozy will work for him. |

->> I'm using Backblaze as a supplement to my Time Machine backups.
The only thing with most of these systems as Cliff described is that your photos will be deleted if the online service doesn't see the files existing on your computer.
At least with Backblaze, if they don't see your external drive attached you'll get 30 days before it's deleted. |

| ->> Mozy says the same thing (about giving you 30 days) but somehow they got deleted anyway. Personally, I shy away from any online sites except Photoshelter, Amazon S3, and Zenfolio (only for client image access -- it's super cheap and I wouldn't care if they went under and all my pictures were deleted). |
