->> There are some amazing photos in this year’s World Press Photo contest winners. And lots of extremely graphic and disturbing photos too. As usual, there are some photos in there I just don’t get. The photo of the year was part of a photo essay that was unusual and quite compelling. I don’t think that’s the one I would have chosen for photo of the year, but I really like seeing what the World Press Photo judges choose. That contest always opens my eyes to other possibilities in photojournalism.

->> I particularly liked Donald Miralle's 1st place sports action story on the Ironman http://www.worldpressphoto.org/index.php?option=com_photogallery&task=view&...

And on the completely other end of the spectrum, I found the slaughterhouse images to be some of the most compelling images awarded this year. Haunting, to say the least.

One thing is apparent from looking at everything: converting to black and white, over toning and vignetting will increase you chances of winning.

Give it up Alex! It's been a year since this
http://bit.ly/cVF85j placed third in the Portrait Stories category and I'm still befuddled.

Seeing a series of doll portraits win in a major photojournalism contest makes you realize how "vision" is truly in the eye of the beholder.
