Has anyone done this? Did you feel it was worth the $500 for the service?

Im looking at a used D3 to replace a broken D700 and the larger buffer is very interesting.

->> Matt,

I was going to do it, way back when it came out, I couldn't justify it at that time, Now, that I can justify it economically, I can't see me Spending $500 on an older body!! I love the D3, great body, You know what I shoot, and I have been able to manage shooting RAW without it. Would my d3's perform faster and better with the Upgrade?? Maybe. But At this time, I don't want to spend the $500 on a body that has a replacement already on top of it.

But in your case, you are going to use your D3 until it explodes and falls appart, so it might be justified for you.

Y

->> The buffer size that Nikon lists in their stats & specs on the D3 is a bit like car manufacturers' stated MPG. It's measured under ideal circumstances--most likely not the conditions in which you'll be using it. I found it frustratingly easy to hit the buffer limit with the D3.

A gently used D3 plus the upgrade (occasionally you can even find 'em used with the upgrade already done, too...) is still $1500-ish less than a D3s.

Depends on how you shoot. For me it was VERY worth the 500. Now my D3s has it built in. If you shoot RAW you will find it much better. I do runway and fashion a lot. It sucks to hit the end of the buffer and have to wait for it. You will also find using the faster UDMA cards to be a big help! You may want to try that first and save the 500 for another month.

->> I rarely mash the shutter, but hit the buffer a couple times when shooting (I always shoot NEFs) so recently decided to get the upgrade on both bodies as part of general servicing after two years.

It paid off just today at the AT&T Pro Am...Bill Murray sank a putt and went bananas for an extended period. I just held down the shutter and got a crazy-great sequence of him making ridiculous faces...and still hit the buffer on the very last shot! Just checked now in Photo Mechanic and it was 48 frames total...the best images were towards the end...and would have been missed without the upgrade.

Yes, even if you don't stand on the shutter...it's worth it!

->> Michael... you didn't need to upgrade the buffer for the Bill Murray sequence. You could've just downloaded Caddyshack.
