Sports Portraits, your thoughts?
Daniel Mullan, Student/Intern

->> Hi guys,

Im currently doing a module at university, which discusses the contextual aspect of sports portraits.
I thought here would be a great place to start.

Basically the question im asking is what do you think the purpose of a sports portrait is?

Whether it is in a sporting context e.g. an NBA playing in their kit with basketball immitating a dunk. Or outside of it. for example a portrait of an NFL player at home with their family etc.

What do you think of when planning a portrait shoot? what do you want to achieve?

Any information, thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Tough question on alot of different fronts.

When I'm doing a portrait it depends on the client, I shoot for a commercial gain as opposed to a PJ approach so I need to know what the client needs, what will help him ( and the subject) to get the required results.

The purpose is.....what do I need - for the client or for my self. Are we educating, are we exposing a side not seen, or we entertaining, or we using or exploiting a commercial opportunity.

Your question is so broad that I think it's why you haven't got alot of feedback. Go deeper with your question and you may get more answers.

->> Dan,

As a photo editor, when it comes to cover portraits, the first consideration is what will catch a readers eye and make them pick up the magazine from the newsstand. Sometimes photographers forget that it's not about showing off their talent, it's about selling something.
