| ->> Do you have any ideas on internships for this summer? I have applied in Cedar Rapids, and Multiple places in South Dakota. But I need to apply for more, and if anyone has any ideas that would be great. I live in Brookings, SD currently and would like to try to stay within 5 hours of Sioux Falls. But I will take any thing into consideration. Please let me know. Thanks! |

->> Robby,
The Northwest Herald offers 6-month photo internships. Google Maps says it's 8.5 hours, but we're usually a little flexible on scheduling if you need a three day weekend to go back home or something.
We haven't posted our summer/fall internship yet, because we like to verify that the position will be there before we do, but here's the link to the flyer from our last round:

Good luck! |

->> I'm not sure how internships have changed in the past few years - I did three in 2003-2004 - but I have two pieces of advice.
1. Be willing to go anywhere.
2. Use the ASNE site to find a list and then apply to as many as you can stand. I still have a folder of about 100 rejection letters from tons of great and not so great newspaper internships - all of which came from the asne site.

Unfortunately the NPPA list is only available to members. But it is also a great resource and can be found under the "Professional Development - Students" section of the site

Finally, calling or emailing photo editors is another a way to find out about opportunities. You should be prepared with a link to a tightly editing online portfolio and a current resume. When doing this look beyond just newspapers and think about other organizations, especially online ones, that also use photography. They may have unadvertised internships.
Good Luck

| ->> The NPPA internship list is, alas, horribly outdated. Many of them do not exist anymore, and others that were once paid are now unpaid. The contact information is outdated as well, with different staffers in charge than when the list was made. |

->> Doug - Many of the changes (i.e., internship cuts, ect.) that made the NPPA list "horribly outdated" more than likely happened within the last 18-24 months due to the crashing economy.
Horrible, indeed. |
