->> I am shooting a women's basketball game and was wondering if anyone had shot ideas. I shoot a 50D paired with a 70-200mm IS f/2.8L lens. I have had pretty good luck thus far, just check out my page, but I am constantly looking to improve my pictures. what do you think?
Thanks! |

->> Robby,
I would watch your horizons.. looking at some of your shots, I find myself tilting my head some. Also watch to not crop off limbs. In "Drive it Home" you cropped off her foot. Maybe mix it up and change positions to something lower or higher. Maybe closer to the center of the baseline to get nice driving shots?
Have you thought about putting up remotes? That may be a good option to get you some different angles. |

->> You've got the basics down, now go for more. Whether that means remotes (as David mentioned), or just shooting a lot tighter or wider. A lot of your images are shot from a VERY similar perspective.
Mix it up. |

->> I once applied for an internship in Allentown, Pa. sometime around 1994 or 95. I didn't get the internship. No one got the internship. The price of newsprint went up and the newspaper elected not to have an intern. But, they did call some of us with a critique of our portfolios. One particular comment about my portfolio that was that all the head sizes were the same in my portfolio. That's pretty much what Joel is saying.
You appear to have a grasp on basketball. So now that you know where the action is going to happen and you can shoot it full-length, take a risk and shoot it half-length. |

->> Robby,
One more thing came to mind as I have been reading the other responses in this thread. If possible, consider applying to go to the Sportsshooter academy in Southern California next year. The whole time revolves around the theme of "See Better, Shoot Better". Spending the week trying new things and having personal time with some of the most respected in the business is so priceless that it is worth looking into. As a student who is looking into becoming a valuable part of this profession, the more your practice this, the better off you will be. Will it be easy? Probably not. But will the work be worth it? Absolutely. So practice new angles and techniques. If you fail, who cares? You're getting better every time you pick up your camera and try something new. |
