->> I am in need of a new 77mm dia filter and wondering what others use. This is more for protection and the 'old' one recently saved my 70-200 lense.
I usually use B+W but they have "enhanced" versions now.
What are you using? does the "enhanced" versions help. I am not looking for any color or speciality type filter.

->> I like B&W and have most of them for my UV filters. They run about $90. I also like the Heliopan filters.
For polarizers and ND filters, I get Tiffen and they run about $40-70 and work very well. I imagine the B&W ones would be much higher qual, but I use pol and ND, esp. so infrequently, it's not worth it for me to spend more.

| ->> I'm also looking at UV filters... except that I'm about to buy at least 3 of them. I see that Tiffen has something new called an Ultra Clear filter that costs about $80. Anybody have any experience with them, good or bad? I'm also looking for a model that retains the threads on the front, for use with an ND. |

| ->> Make sure you get the regular and not the thins. The thins will not let you put your factory lens cap back on but the regular ones will. |

->> B+W and Heliopan here...
I used a tiffen and a hoya for a short while and found something kept giving them color casts; no idea what or why, but it doesn't seem to happen with the nicer filters. |

| ->> B+W here, they are fantastic. Have had a few Hoya also, liked them but I found them much harder to clean than my B+W for some reason. |

| ->> I used to use Hoya's now just using B+W's and a couple of Nikon filters. The B+W's are nice and as I replace more filters I will be going forward with just B+W's. They seem less prone to flare than the Hoya's were. |

->> Kent, I'm not going to give you a hard time for your lack of filters.
But the lack of capitalization, punctuation, apostrophes and other markers of professional communication–well, that's another story ;) |

->> I recommend the cheapest UV or clear filter available. Color cast? Pssst, with digital software it's a snap to correct. The first time your lens takes a header on the concrete, you'll be glad you had a filter on, and doubly glad that filter didn't cost 90 bucks!
Don't tell my boss, but I've toasted a dozen filters in the past dozen years. Not having to replace a front element? (nearly) priceless! |

->> Thanks everyone I went with the B+W as I have in the past. I thought about the cheapest UV like Robert mentioned but 40 bucks more not a major cost to get a better quality.
NO filter is fine for some but so far a low cost filter less than 100 bucks has saved two $1200 lenses. File the insurance claims all you want until they don't want to cover you or raise your premiums
In my eye cheap money for protection.

->> If to save a few $ you want to put a cheap piece of glass in front of your finely designed and aligned lens then be my guest. Everything that light goes through to finally hit your film or sensor effects the image quality. Poor filters can reduce resolution, focus accuracy and contrast. They also are much more prone to flair and ghosting.
If you want to see a nice and exhaustive set of tests on filters to make your own mind read this: http://www.lenstip.com/113.1-article-UV_filters_test_Introduction.html
It's a pity that they don't include Nikon filters as they are as good or better in terms of anti reflective coatings than B+W or Heilopan. I've been using a Nikon L1Bc on every lens of mine for nearly the last 20 years and it has saved me numerous lenses front elements from being damaged. |

->> "...i dont use filters! hehe..."
All it's going to take is one small rock breaking the front element of that pretty lens of your to change your mind.
When it does please let us all know about it so that we can laugh.
Hehe. |

->> I've always used BW or Nikon filters, but I just put a Rodenstock filter on my 50/1.2 and I'm very happy with it. It cost less than the BW (in this case) and the ring is very thin.
It appears to be very good optically as well. I didn't experience any strange flaring or reflections. |
