OT: Vinyl?
Nic Coury, Photographer

->> So I'm sitting here editing a client ad shoot from this morning listening to Thelonius Monk from my massive collective of vinyl and wondering who else out there collects/listens to vinyl?

A few choice selections from my collection:

+ Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" - second release, which I bought at a flea market for $2.

+ An original copy of "Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie.

+ Almost every Joni Mitchell album. I love her collection of work.

What cool stuff do other people out there have?

Happy editing,

~ nic

->> Nic,
I don't know that I have any particularly 'special' vinyl recordings, but I do have a decent stash from my past (Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, The Boss, Graham Nash, James Taylor, Elvis Costello) and recently have bought a few new recordings on vinyl. Having grown up with 45's and lp's in the 60's and 70's, then made the transition to cd, it sorta blows my mind to go into my local independent record shop and see new vinyl slowly taking over the store. As far as I can tell, young people are re-discovering this 'pure' form of listening to their music. The young owners of the shop have a theory that the pendulum is swinging away from the rather impersonal, digitally based music to something people can interact with in a more intimate way. It's as if the whole idea is completely new (which I suppose it is to the younger generations), and with more and more artists putting out their latest releases on vinyl, apparently it's catching on.

->> Count me in as well.

Most of what I have is either jazz or vintage rock, although I am adding classical as well. There are two record stores (yeah, as in vinyl) up the street from my apartment, and I can get virginal used records for just a few bucks. And they also stock new vinyl as well. Blue Note has been good with the reissues which aren't terribly expensive, although the real finds are the original pressings which can often be found for pretty good prices.

I recently upgraded (if you can call it that) to a Rega P1 turntable. For the price, it's a good deal.

How about cleaning? I've been using the Groovy Cleaner system (which I find does a good job), but just wondering what other people use to clean their records (some of the used records I find, despite not being scratched, can be pretty crusty).

->> I have a couple hundred vinyl records. Though I don't listen to them very often. My favorite ones are on CD and on my iPod, and that's just more convenient. But I love collecting them. Many of the covers are real works of art, and I've got a few of them framed and hanging on my wall.

->> For those that have vinyl sitting around but like the convenience of mp3s or CDs, I recommend getting a USB turntable. You can plug the turntable into your computer, and by using Audacity or a number of other software programs, you can convert your records to digital. I just got one, and while I love listening to records, it's a way for me to make some of my favorite stuff more portable. They are available in a number of price ranges, and they more than make up for their cost after converting a few records. I can buy a record for $.25 at a garage sale and convert it, when buying the same record released on CD might cost me $15.

I have a birthmark on my left calf that looks a little like Telly Savalas.

Oh, and a copy of Steve Martin's 1978 "A Wild and Crazy Guy" ...

That's a vinyl, though -- not a birthmark. Now *that* would be cool stuff.

It all stays crated in my closet since I don't own a turntable any longer.

->> A little under 6,000 pieces of Vinyl, all placed in those large indestructible 1970's Knudens milk crates.
My collection is mostly Jazz, 60's & 70's soul funk R&B,
I also have a about 200 Vinyl picture disc's from the 80's, remember those?

And a belt drive Technic 1200 turntable in my office right behind where I edit photos,
there is no replacing the sound of vinyl, there is no Mp3 player in the world that can duplicate the low end sounds that a good piece of Vinyl can produce.

Thanks for the post

Richard, as far as cleaning, I've been using one of these:
http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=NGRD3
Pricey but they do AMAZING work. My Dad bought one awhile back, I've been bringing stacks of vinyl for cleaning whenever I visit.

->> Something about vinyl seems "warmer" to me...I still listen to as much as I can.
Most of my collection is old rockabilly, old punk rock and hardcore, and some metal. I was in Jersey shooting a punk festival a few years back and ran into some guy selling his old 45's...I got to talking to him and he said I could take the lot for $40...here's what I got:
Black Flag's Six Pack, TV Party and Nervous Breakdown
Bad Brains' Pay To Cum
Government Issue's Give us Stabb or Give Us Death
Dead Kennedys' Nazi Punks F Off with armband and Kill The Poor and to top it off, the Minor Threat Salad Days EP. Still the best $40 I've ever spent!

->> If you've got virtually any modern Mac or a PC with an audio in, you don't need a USB turntable...just one with a built-in preamp and you can import right into GB, audacity or Adobe Soundbooth (as I've been doing for the past year...) for lots of old punk, indy, reggae that is nearly impossible to find digitally such as Great R&R Swindle, and a ton of other rare things, b-sides, etc.

An old friend 'borrowed' and then 'lost' a good portion of my collection, and I sold off some other stuff but I've still got a great stack of rarities including an original pointed heart cover of The Modern Lovers, White vinyl first pressing of The Damned Phantasmagoria, Red vinyl Therapy? Nurse, and much much more... something about those hisses and pops that just feels like 'home.'

->> Ah man, you've brought back way to many memories wit this post! I've got to go dig out the boxes I've still got (stored in a controlled environment) I probably have 2500 titles from the 50's up through the mid-eighties when I was a DJ at a local nightclub carting crates in/out every night. Its been at least 10 years since I've touched any of them...my turntable broke and I never got around to fixing it. (Why does life get in the way when we are making other plans?)

I keep thinking I'm going to sell them off, but just can't quite bring myself to do it. Worst of the Mothers, Sticky Fingers, Pat Travers Puttin' it Straight, anything pink Floyd, The White Album when it was actually an album! number 9, number 9, number 9.... (man, just think of how many times that one got played backwards!)

->> I have an original Sun Records 78 RPM 10" of Carl Perkins Blue Suede Shoes.
My specialty though is early reggae and mod revival stuff. I have an original 7" of The Maytals Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses from 1963. An original of the first Wailing Wailers LP from 1964. A bunch of stuff on the Prince Buster label.

I also have a ton of early 80s stuff from The Cure and a Smiths gold record that used to belong to the band's drummer.

Of all the cool rare stuff I have though my favorite is Michael Row The Boat Ashore by The Hippy Boys on Trojan Records from 1969 (I think). It is hands down the coolest reggae tune I've ever heard.
