Would love some tips on what to do with my down time!
Thanks!

I can vouch that the aquarium is pretty cool if you're into that sort of thing (and there aren't 50 school groups there). And the Coca Cola museum is pretty neat if, again, you're into that sort of thing. |

if you're into that sort of thing. |

| ->> +1 for the Georgia Aquarium - it is amazing, and I would suggest buying tickets in advance, as they try to control the number of people in the museum at one time, so that everyone will have an opportunity to view the exhibits and not be 3-4 deep. |

->> I'm so jealous. I'm from ATL, but I haven't been back in years.
If I were going, I'd do:
Fat Matt's Rib Shack on Piedmont or Rolling Bones BBQ on Edgewood Ave or Six Feet Under on Memorial Drive.
Zoo Atlanta (it might be too cold).
Botanical Gardens are awesome.
High Museum of Art.
Coke Museum is cool too.
Just hang out in Little Five Points or Virginia Highlands. You might check out a show at the Variety Playhouse.
The Martin Luther King Jr Historic area, especially Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was pastor.
I love this city, and I could go on. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want more suggestions.
Have a blast.

->> Thanks all! I have a feeling I'm going to have quite a bit of down time so I appreciate your suggestions. I can't believe I'm taking this trip as a mom instead of a photographer and leaving all the gear at home. I'm not going to know what to do with myself!

->> You for sure need to go to the Varsity, old school Burger joint across from GA Tech. Also, you might want to checkout Stone Mountain, a big rock. BIG Big rock that is, and they have some Snow tubing for the kids going on right now.
Bring a rain jacket, looks like cold and nasty weather this weekend. |

->> Kennesaw Mountain or Stone Mountain depending on the weather - I kind of like kennesaw mountain since there are so many fewer people and there are some cannons still in place (maybe restored) from the civil war - and you can see the whole of atlanta and stone mountain from it - it gives you a sense of scale/stepping back.
Fernbank Museum is pretty cool too - lots of dinosaurs, interesting exhibits, IMAX, etc.
Get breakfast at Old Hickory House - go i85 north from downtown, east on i285, take the Lavista exit and turn left. Then turn left on Northlake Parkway, and it's on your left about 300 yards down. Change your life! Remember - the key with southern food is that the worse it looks the better it tastes ;)
The Varsity tends to be more about experience than food - I've never really liked it, though there are those who would kick me for saying so. Don't go there at night - I have more than one friend who has been mugged in the parking lot. |

->> We are staying at the Marriott Perimeter Center. I don't usually get lost, but have to admit wasting a lot of time driving around this maze they call roads. Wow! It seems like all the streets have the same name or the same words in the name! Ha Ha So far I haven't seen much, but hope to start changing that today.
Thanks for the help everyone! |

->> Thanks for the tips everyone. Atlanta rocks and I can't wait to go back next year.
My kid's team placed 4th and got a bid to the Worlds in Orlando, FL this April so I guess I'll be looking for Orlando tips soon.
We ended up doing the Body Exhibition and Dialogue-In-The-Dark. The bodies were cool, but Dialogue was a mind altering experience.
Dialogue lets you literally walk in the shoes of a blind person. For 45 minutes to an hour, you are in a totally dark controlled environment and have to perform normal everyday tasks like shopping, crossing a street, walking through a park, etc. It was amazing and an experience I HIGHLY recommend for everyone, especially for us photographers whose livelihood depends on our sight. I love experiencing things that shift my thought process and Dialogue definitely did that. Right now the only place it's playing in the USA is Atlanta, but it's in many countries all over the world. If anyone goes to Atlanta, you have to experience Dialogue. Here's the website http://www.dialogtickets.com/exhibition.html
I LOVED it. |

| ->> By the way, Israel - no tips on southern food needed here. I may be a California girl, but my family is from Mobile, Alabama so I grew up on the greasiest and best southern cooking you will ever stick a fork in! Ha Ha |

->> Jody drive up north on I-75 to Chattanooga. Is a nice ride. Less than 2 hrs. Lots of great southern images to capture. I got my first foto break at the Chatt Times. IN Atlanta I can put you in touch with a wonderful friend of mine, David Tulis, who can really help you in case you need anything. You will find how down to earth those folks are. So be ready to say "hi" over and over and to hear
"Ya'll come back you hear"
Enjoy your time in Atlanta.
Please go to the Varsity and snap some photos. Cool place for that. I wouldn't eat their food for free. A greasy spoon and a heart attack in the making. Then after eating there your belly swells up then complains "WTF did you put inside of me do you hate me that much." They are many other places to enjoy a fine meal.

->> Jody... we will be shooting World's, so as the time approaches, drop me an email and maybe we can meet up to say hi.
You'll love Worlds... besides the weather and things to do in the area, it's a very well run show given its size. |
