Case for Strobes

->> I am looking for a new case for my new to me strobes. I have a pelican 1650 case in which i put my photogenics, light cords and reflectors. I just bought a set of EL500 elinchroms along with a set of high performance reflectors and need a case for them. My budget is $200. I don't want a pelican because of the weight. I will only using these lights around town and will not be flying with these.

This is what the contents will be.
2x EL 500 Elinchrom
2x Elinchrom high performance reflectors
3x Pocket Wizards with sync cords
3x Super Clamps
2x 50ft power cords
1x roll of gaffer tape

You might want to check out your local Lowe's, Menards, Home Depot, etc. and check out some of their rolling tool carts/boxes. I know they are not designed for photo gear but if you want a roller, light weight, on a budget, you'll have pretty good luck going this direction. I purchased a Stanley box last year for about $50.00.

There are lots of options so just do a little shopping until you find something that works.

->> Kent, for the price its hard to beat the Photoflex single kit case.

http://www.photoflex.com/Photoflex_Products/Transpac_Single_Kit_Case/index....

You can fit all that stuff plus a couple stands and a softbox all in one rolling case.

Its not the lightest case but its nice to have an entire kit ready to go, and fits easily in the trunk.

Other than that Tenba makes some nice car cases that fit your budget.

Good Luck!

->> Hi guys, I'll chime in just for the reason that I had one of those Photoflex single cases. It was a great case, but when fully packed, it got HEAVY; heavy enough for me to throw my back out of alignment and take me out for a few weeks; no bueno.

Since then I switched to the Multicart R8, which has been amazing. Extremely versatile, and packs up pretty small. If you look around at the right places, it can go for right around $100. Good luck!

->> Kevin,

Just got one of these cases from Adorama. So far so good! Zippers work well, the red interior is nice for seeing all those black cables and pieces and with a couple of velcro straps, you can hang additional sling bags to the case.

->> As with any case you never want to over pack it, I made that mistake once and broke a handle which was promptly replaced by Photoflex and a 5 minute DIY job put everything back together. I have had mine for 2 years and they have taken plenty of abuse besides that though.

I also use a Multicart R10 If I need both cases.

->> Here's what I do. I purchased the padded strobe cases from Paul Buff/White Lightning. $14 each. This provides for some extra padding and safety for each individual strobe. Then I went and got an old suit case and use that to put all four strobes in their individual padded cases inside the suitcase. I then can put all other cords and accessories in the suitcase for easy transportation. My EL500's and 600s fit fine.

Now, I'm not sure I would ship them like this, although it's pretty padded, but it makes a great cheap way to transport strobes in and out of arenas from my car and everything is self contained. The suitcase I found in the attic, but you can easily buy a cheap one with handle and rolling wheels to keep inside of your $200 budget.

For my other set I have purchased from www.versa-flex.com Great company and custom sizes. A little more pricy. Higly recommended though.

This isn't the case I use, but something of similar size and shape. Shop around to be sure you get one that is big enough.

Good luck!

->> Kent,

I carry two fifty foot extension cords, all my radio remotes (cybersyncs), cables, clamps, power cords, and two Alienbee B800s + more in a Stanley tools Fatmax 4-in-1 and it works perfectly. Maybe that is something to consider?

->> One thing I wanted to do this season was to be able to get all my gear in one bag. 2 alien bees, 2 bodies, 2 flashes, 2 lens, cables, reflectors, radio remotes, batteries, and all the little odds and ends that I need when I take my strobes along. I don't use them every event, but if possible and I'm shooting more than one high school game in one place, they go.

I looked at several bags like the ones linked above. They all did great for the strobes, but didn't have enough room for the camera gear too. I was still stuck with 2 bags.

I didn't completely get my wish, and as Matthew states - Damn heavy, but dam nice - I got a pelican 1620. It holds it all with the exception of my 11" reflectors and the 2 13ft. light stands which I can bungee cord together and carry in the other hand while wheeling the pelican.

I haven't scaled it, but it's probably near 75 or 80 pounds when it is fully packed. It isn't at all easy to load in the back seat of my F150, but it's water proof so loading it in the back isn't any problem at all. (for those of you thinking I'm a big guy, think again). A couple cargo ramps also help if I'm feeling tired.

If you don't mind carrying multiple bags, then get one of the ones above. If you want everything in one bag, you need to keep looking.

->> I am still looking for a case for my lights. It seems that everything i look at won't fit the high performance reflectors. I want to keep to size and weight down. My pelican 1650 is to heavy. There is only 1 camera shop here it des moines and they don't carry cases for lights. Looked at the Kata oc-88 but the reflectors won't fit.

Can somebody with Elinchrom EL500 and high performance reflectors chime in and tell me what they use. I have decided to up my budget to $400.

->> Kent,
I have Elinchrom's 1200's, 600's and 500's and also the (6) 10.5 high performance reflectors along with (5) of the larger Maxi-spot. I just hand carry the reflectors. I use several different cases which include an Elinchrom plastic case, a Verasa Flex case and then also a modified rolling suitcase. I haul all these with a Multi Cart when I need all the lights to light an arena. Not really the answer you are looking for but it works for me. The reflectors are such an odd shape that you may find it hard to be able to find one case to fit it all.

I use a couple of bungi cords to strap on my Think Tank Airport Security and bleacher seat. I can take everthing in one trip and wheel it in. I do ship this as well when I shoot out of state.
