Canon 100mm Macro Error Message
Glenn Moore, Photo Editor

->> I am getting an error message with my Canon 100mm macro lens when I use it on my Eos 40D. It says there is a communication error between the camera and lens and to clean the contacts. It gives the same error message with two different 40D bodies but does not do give the error message with my work camera which is a Canon Eos 1D MK II. Has any one else had this problem? All my other lenses work just fine. Any suggestions or is this a CPS issue?

->> Back when I was working in camera retail in the mid-90s we saw some of what you're experiencing as new EOS bodies were coming on line. Mostly the problem occurred with aftermarket lenses, but we also saw it with some early L lenses on newer bodies --- where compatibility would be hit or miss...

Our speculation was that there were design/manufacturing tolerances for both bodies and lenses, and that if you happened to grab a body at one end of the extreme and a lens at the other end of the acceptable range, then you could get communication errors with a higher frequency than you would if both items were in the middle of the range...

If the 100 macro is old, it might be time to buy a new one, to alleviate the problem. (And I suspect that since you're seeing the issue on a pair of 40Ds, that it might be the lens.)

In the alternative, contact Canon and see what they say....
