R.I.P. Andy Nelesen
Peter Zuzga, Photographer
Waukesha | WI | USA | Posted: 3:18 PM on 01.28.10
->> Andy Nelesen, a reporter-photographer-jack of all trades-and friend to all who knew him died today at age 38, Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at 12:18 P.M.in Green Bay, Wis. Andy worked for the Press Gazette in Green Bay for the past 13 years and fell ill Monday night at the paper after suffering significant brain injury from which recovery was impossible. It was decided by Andy's family and friends that he would want his organs donated to save the lives of others and that is what is happening this afternoon.

Andy was not a member here and was officially a reporter for the P-G, but he was also one hell of a photographer and in 1997 made what can only be described as an iconic photo of the Green Bay Packer's Sean Jones holding his son and the Lombardi Trophy following the Packers Super Bowl win that year. I think Andy was in his first full month at the P-G when they sent him to the Super Bowl and he made that photo.

We called him Big Andy for a reason, he was an imposing guy and you always knew when Andy was near, but the "Big" in Big Andy was his heart. Andy never did anything half way and there was was no one he could help that he didn't. In 2001 when I was layed-off from the Waukesha Freeman Andy drove down to Milwaukee after telling his bosses at the P-G he had a "family" emergency because he didn't want me to be alone that day. That's one of thousands of stories like that that can be told about Andy.

Some people have big Hallmark greeting card families and some don't. Even though Big Andy was younger then me, he was like a big brother from the time we met at the Waukesha Freeman as 20something cubs full of our jobs and full of ourselves. We worked hard and drank harder, but news always came first.

Rest in peace Brother,
Peter

->> My condolences as well, Peter. Andy must have been one heck of a guy. Count your blessing for having the chance to have known him.
