Someone like me that owns an iPhone already and doesn't need 3G connectivity everywhere with my tablet will be perfectly happy. It will work great for e-book reading, hanging at the coffee shop and playing scrabble(yes I play scrabble), watching a movie on the airplane and general things. I don't think people need 3G everywhere they go, nor do they want to pay 30 bucks a month to have it.

Though I think it would be great for web surfing and other things and I am hopeful from a content-producer perspective. It's interesting and there will no doubt be some great apps for it but I'm not exactly blown away right now.

->> I think this thing has potential.

My workflow has mostly moved to a desktop for more speed and power, so I don't fully use my laptop as a computer. When my laptop dies, I'll be in the market for something with more functionality than a smartphone for when I'm away from the desk.

Apple is advertising an attachment that allows for either a USB connection or a SD card reader to download photos. That plus tethering it to my smartphone and I can see editing and sending a few photos from location. The 64gig size limitation is a little bit of a turnoff, but it's a start. It sure would beat carrying around a laptop.

If the wizards whip up a robust aperture/lightroom type app, I think the device could be a great tool in the field.

Obviously there are some major things I'd like to see, but as others are saying around the interwebs, they gotta save something for 2.0.

"does anyone look at this and see a better future for our profession?"

First - With the "camera connection kit" and some some simple photo/caption editing software, (you know there will be a ton of them) I can carry this with me to edit and transmit simple stuff on tight newspaper deadline or "I want it NOW!" web deadlines. I could even post the photos on the web site myself!

Second - This could be the way newspapers finally attract "the younger generation"
The Kindle just delivered newspaper text - without graphics or photos! A news aggregator's dream, but not a way to entice readers to your newspaper site.

This may actually be preferable to reading actual newspaper. Don't knock it till you've see Apple's video.

Right now it seem to be of more of media playing device, but with the (optional) SD reader and (optional) USB port and (optional) keyboard (http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/ - accessories at bottom of page) we could have a device we could use for filing from the field instead of lugging a full size laptop. We still need someone to port Lightroom to the iPad (or wait for Apple to develop Aperture Lite for it) along with an ftp client. Each optional accessory adds to the bulk and price of the thing though.

Why can't Apple come out with a small netbook like the Dell Mini 10v? That's what I really want.

You're right price is subjective, but with prices ranging from 499 to 899 that is pretty darn expensive for a 9 inch ipod.

I think their price point could have been lower, plus again the models on ATT network will suffer from speed issues.

It also makes me wonder about the whole verizon rumor now, I have a bad feeling that apple is going to stick with ATT.

Remember how iTunes changed the way we buy music?
Give the iPad some years.

When I got my first iPod in 2003, everyone laughed at me. 2009, everyone has one. And everyone buys music over iTunes. Why? Because it's even easier than download it illegal on the internet.

It will change the media industry.

->> I am torn on it. I really like the idea of it, except that it is just a iTouch on steroids. I would have liked something more along the lines of a Macbook Air turned into a iPad, a little more computing power. I have a Macbook and a Macbook Pro, and I am starting to do more and more studio setting stuff, and I would have loved to see a larger hard drive, a firewire connection, and enough juice to run Aperture, that I could tether to my 1D's to that would be less bulky than my Macbook Pro. That being said, if I flew more than I do, I would much rather have the iPad to watch movies on than my iPhone or have to pull my laptop out during the flight, and having a few different portfolios on it, along with email and web browsing, and books, etc, etc, it is an interesting concept.

I think it blows the Kindle away. My sister got the newer Kindle, and it is cool, she loves it, but at $259, the step up to the iPad is worth the $ in my opinion, plus there is a Kindle iPhone app. If you look at the Kindle DX, priced at $489 for only a little more, you get the iPad with the same size screen, but color, email, web, photos, music, movies. So much more than a Kindle can do.

Another drawback for me is the screen. I have a hard enough time putting a screen protector on my iPhone, I can only imagine that it will be a bigger pain putting it on the iPad.

I think like most Apple products, this will evolve into a complimentary device...ipod/iphone for music etc...ipad for video & internet.... just my thinking....

I was shocked at price point....I had predicted 899 for BASE model....so I was surprised....

Personally, I am upgrading desktop first.....but I may reconsider the ipod touch for an ipad...and hang on to the blackberry until APple and Verizon kiss and make up! ATT sucks around here....and that is a COMPLIMENT compared to what most users think about the 3G network here in the valley....

I know for me, reading a computer screen for hours on end can be bothersome. I waited for today's announcement to see what they'd come up with, but it still won't keep me from ordering a Kindle as my main reading device.

That said, I could see myself getting a future generation iPad as a mixed media device, especially if they can add a few more of the features others have already mentioned.

btw- for those debating which eReader to get, I've now used both the nook (bought) and Kindle (1st gen, borrowed)... and just returned the nook. Too many bugs with this first iteration, so I'll be going with Kindle. Even the older Kindle is much easier to use.

->> There is simply no company that can understand the consumer and his or her intent/desires/wishes, but at the same time, develop products that fufill needs that you didn't even know you had better than APPLE.

Just before the first iPhone was introduced, the Wall Street Journal had a story interviewing competitors. Most of them said something to the effect that while they respected Apple, they had years of experience and essentially wished Apple well, but didn't view them as a threat.

As a marketing person, I remember telling my wife "I feel sorry for these people. They have no idea what they are about to run up against." They soon discovered the power of Apple marketing.

I downloaded the stream from the intro tonight. I think these guys are going to make it a two horse race between them and Amazon in a hurry. Amazon will be a player because of the fact they are viewed as a bookseller. The iPad is a elegant product that will do so much more than Kindle.

Apple never competes on price. They give you lots of cool features and things you didn't know you wanted or needed and people opt for cool. I feel sorry for their competition.

Whether PJs buy this product or not is of little concern to Apple. They will go out and create a huge market and then own it.

I'm glad I don't sell Goss printing presses for a living. Those guys are a endangered species.

I do think this will help the newspaper business transition. Welcome to the brave new world.

Good for a single photographer without a runner. Especially for that game changing shot. If i remember Reuters was suing a system with UMPCs at one point similar to that.

It has a card reader, wifi, 3g, a beautiful screen, a virtual and a real keyboard. It doesn't have firewire, so card ingesting will take longer. The processor should be fast enough. It has solid state memory so there is no hard drive to crash. It weighs a pound. 10 hour battery life. Multi-touch.

->> NYT's David Pogue on the iPad:

Like the iPhone, the iPad is really a vessel, a tool, a 1.5-pound sack of potential. It may become many things. It may change an industry or two, or it may not. It may introduce a new category -- something between phone and laptop -- or it may not. And anyone who claims to know what will happen will wind up looking like a fool.

->> Robert, you are correct when you write that the app business is a huge money maker.

Everyone thought the opening price point would be $999 - instead it's $499. The reason is simple: More unit sales translates into more app sales. They will make as much if not more money over the life of the product on apps sales than they will on the unit itself.

->> The expectation was high and if we got what was expected, it might have been worth $999. I think the expectation was for a computer, it isn't, any more than a watch with a calculator is a computer. It does some things that my MacBook g4 does. It does some stuff that my iPhone does, but it doesn't seem that it was meant to do what the MacBook Pro does. It will be a product for people that don't need a computer.

There was a time when the only way to get internet, email and music, was on a full fledged computer at $2k or more. If I didn't need Photoshop and some other programs, the iPad would be nearly perfect.
