Basketball Tournament Shooters: CD or Online Print Sales?

->> Hello fellow members. I finally paid my renewal dues so I am back. Still hanging in there with my editorial work, but I have an oppurtunity to hook up with an organization that puts on basketball tournaments and camps. I have been approached by a company to do all of their photo work and sales. I tried the message board but could not wade my way through to find specific pricing structures. Would someone be willing to help me with a general idea of what the average type of packaging and rates are. I can do online after game sales but the marketing guy and I feel that presales and Cd's are the best way to go. My belief is that you sell them a Cd and and then you are done, no worries with prints, packaging, delivery, etc. of course we would do some print work but get the money, do the work and send them on their way. This could lead to me hiring other shooters since they cover the Southeast region and I can only shoot so much.I may be way off base and that is why I am seeking help here. Any suggestions? Thanks Richard

->> Richard having done this in the past, I would shoot and upload online for purchase and sell from a site. It seems as thought that would be much more lucrative. What is the league organizer's feel for people purchasing prints online? Additionally, in offering a wide variety of products, you can potentially increase your sales. In viewing your site potential purchasers might have more work for you. Just my two cents.

->> Thanks Dirk. I appreciate the advice. He is willing to allow me to do has I deem necessary. I can easily set up online sales through my site. I've shot tournaments and large scale sporting events as a shooter, but I have never been the event photographer. I shot NCAA track and field finals (Atlantic Sun Conference) by myself and covered every single semi-finsl and final event for two days, but I didn't have to sell prints. I just thought I might try to get some feedback on what the current market price structure is. It doesn't start until the end of Feb. so I have time to put things in place. Thanks again.

->> I find price structure to vary from place to place. When I set up mine several years ago, I visited a lot of sites to collect data. I looked at both local and not so local sites across the nation to get an idea of what the market was and where I could fit in given my expenses. It's a pretty easy self survey to conduct if your wanting to do online sales. There are lots of sites to look at, just choose a few. Be sure to try and judge offerings, like type event, etc. so that you are comparing what would be considered your competition.

CD's v prints? I occasionally fill requests for electronic files, but I prefer to stick with prints. I do know others that make pretty good jack by sticking to electronic media. There are pros and cons for each. On the print side, while people can still make copies and it is easy in today's world, it is still more trouble to do so than it is with an efile. On the other hand, distribution is very quick and easy with the efiles. There's lots more to it, but that can be a thought starter.

->> You're right on Alan. That's basically what I thought also. I just wanted to cheat a little and look at someone's balance sheet for prices and then adjust my accordingly....(: Thanks
