Newswear Chestvest Question -- Medium vs Documentary
G.J. McCarthy, Photographer

->> Hey gang:

Quick question for the Newswear users out there with some know-how: anyone have real-world opinions about the differences between these two items?

http://www.newswear.com/mmediumdetail.htm

and

http://www.newswear.com/mdocumentarydetail.htm

They don't look too dissimilar in the photos, but there's no real spec sheet or anything that gives me an understanding as to how differently either might fit gear. They're both the same price so that's not really an issue -- just wondering what thoughts, if any, folks who've used either in the field might have.

Tending toward the latter but am just a little worried it might be too small. I generally don't carry much gear with me; the times I'd use this would mostly be for sports and such, when I generally have most gear on my shoulders or on a monopod and just need something to hold the miscellaneous particulars.

Thanks in advance for your help. Oh, and if you send me unbidden notes about Think Tank, etc. (read: don't sell me on something I didn't ask about, please), I will haunt your dreams from here until the Rapture.

Not kidding.

Cheers,

- gerry -

->> Gerry,

If you're not looking to keep any bodies or longer lenses in the pouches then I'd venture to say that you'd be better served with the Documentary version (the smaller one).

I have the original version and I find that 9 times out of 10 that it's just too roomy so I don't end up using it. Like you, when covering sports I generally have my 400 on the stick, the 70-200 on one body and the wide on another body around my neck so that just leaves me with a need for batteries, CF cards, rolled up weather gear, sunscreen, water bottle, converters, etc... The smaller ChestVest will fit that kind of stuff just fine.

In fact, if I could find someone looking to trade from the smaller one to the larger one I would do so in a second, but so far everyone I know with the "Documentary" version swears by it over the larger one for most uses.

->> Not trying to "pimp" my own article, but if you scroll down you'll see my ChestVest filled with a bunch of junk to give you an idea what the larger one can hold.

I find myself using a different product by a company that you asked us not to mention more than the Chest Vest, but man, that company that I won't mention sure does have some better solutions... just saying.

->> Hey Brian! Hope all is well down in SoFlo. That's EXACTLY the info I was looking for.

Thanks also Debra for the helpful note, too. Funny -- with my small, feminine shoulders (another thing inherited from my mother), I wondered if the women's size would almost be better.

Only if it came in pink, though ...

Cheers,

->> I replaced a well used Digital Chestvest with the smaller Medium and like it a lot more. The Digital was too big, but I picked it used from a SS member and it served me well for years.

I ordered a Documentary vest to dedicate for fire work, since they get all salt crusted and covered with retardant. In doing so, Wes was very accommidating; offering to swap the Doc model for a larger vest after I had taken a look at it.
Very nice to do business with.

I have a Newswear Documentary that you can borrow to try out.
I can bring it downtown and you can pick it up. Shoot me an email and let me know.

->> Hey everybody -- thanks again for the help.

To be fair, I have no problems with a certain company that rhymes with Zinc Bank. They make great products, and their support is awesome, too. I have one of their rolling cases and couldn't be happier with it.

I just get annoyed with all the yahoos on here who don't bother to read the original post and just blather on with their own ideas/agenda. Guess that's the nature of message boards, though.

And more to point, I don't really want another waist pack. From the Mountainsmith Tour (remember those?) on down to Kinesis, I've used 'em for most of my short career (let's say almost seven years for good measure) and am kind of sick of them.

The problem I run into is they always loosen and start sliding off. It's honestly probably due to a bad combination of the fact I find them more comfortable lower on my waist (just below the hips), and that I have almost no ass to speak off. Ask my colleagues here in Dallas (or folks up in CoMo who might remember) how many times my pants have nearly fallen off as I've moved from one side of the field to another. No mas, amigos. No mas.

Anywho, sounds like the Doc vest is the way to go. Again, I don't really need it to hold much gear. I use a small Domke satchel for all of my daily grind work, so I really just need something to hold odds-and-ends during sports, and maybe the much-coveted spot news street brawl between rodeo clowns and Benedictine nuns.

Brian -- love that article, and color me jealous. It's my secret dream to meet Daily Show folks (past and present) at assignments. Fingers and toes crossed I run into Esteban Colberto next month.

Thanks again, peoples.
