Bull Riding @ ISO 128000 with the Nikon D3S.

->> Spent a couple of days shooting the Professional Bull Riders Anaheim Invitational at the Honda Center for a bit of a change of pace.
Those of you that have shot there know it is pretty darn dark for a major sports venue.
Bull riding requires a very high shutter speed to stop the action --- a great test of the high ISO capabilities of the new professional DSLRs. (It's amazing how fast and how high a 2000-pound bull can jump!)
I shot most of the action at ISO 128000; 1/2000 @ f/2.8; using both a 300mm and 70-200mm zoom.
The quality of the images at such a high ISO was simply amazing!
I had shot football and basketball with the D3s at 1600, 3200 and 6400 and was blown away. But cranking it all the way to ISO 128000 I have to admit I had some doubts.
USA TODAY posted a little "Sights & Sounds" gallery from the PBR Anaheim Invitational and though the images are not large, you can get a sense of the low-noise relative to the high ISO:

(I am working on a full users report on my experiences with the D3S that I will post sometime in the near future.)

->> Having just covered ten West Texas county livestock shows for the local newspaper, some in show barns with a few bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling, I have to say that the ISO 12,800 is just sick, sick, sick.
Very nice work, by the way. Look forward to hearing more. |

| ->> Robert those are amazing shots. Did you use any sort of noise reduction or are they SOOC? Everytime I see somebody shoot low light in that quality I turn around and kick myself in the ass for switching to Canon and my new Mark III stepchild. |

->> No in-camera high-ISO noise reduction.
No, no Noise Ninja.
It also appears that the "S" is a tad bit "hotter" than the original D3 at ISO 6400+.
Check out Roberto Beck's BSC Game and boxing photos shot with the "S" ... simply amazing.
(And I hear the new Canon has great high-ISO quality as well.) |

| ->> I recently shot the bull riders as they were passing thru NYC and the D3s would have been nice to use. (I was using the D3). Dark and dreary are definitely words that come to mind, but I loved shooting it. First time at a bull riders event and it definitely won't be my last (next time it will be with the D3s) |

Also some other new images. Let me know what you think.

->> Bert,
Great audio slide show. The photos were great (a given), but your nat-sound intro really brought me in to the rodeo and kept me in. great quotes. especially clarifying that this wasn't your typical rodeo (with pyrotechnics) & clean audio interviews. the 12,800. awesome!
fav photo: 4' long string of bull snot (or what looks like it) on a peak action photo. nice :) |

128,000? Unbelievable.
Anyone who has never shot bull riding should. Being nuts has to be a job requirement to be a bull rider. |

->> Michael, it's 12,800; he corrected.
Shooting bull riding is a blast! They are coming to Fresno in March and I'm campaigning (kissing ass, begging, groveling) to get on the strobes... |

I have a short write up about shooting the PBR Anaheim event on the SportsShooterAcademy.com site.
And as mentioned, I will be writing a full users report for ssa.com in a week or so.

->> Bert,
What I want to know is if you geared up for the rodeo?
St. Paul, a small farming community here in Oregon, puts on a big time rodeo on the 4th of July. Here is the dress requirement for credentialed journalists:
"PRCA clothing regulations state that all media personnel and photographers must wear a long-sleeved button-down or western shirt, long pants, boots and a western hat while present in the arena and chute area. This regulation is mandatory with safety as the top priority. In addition, this event is highly photographed for both television and the print media; the clothing requirement also ensures the western flavor of the show."
I agree with Garrett...great narrative. Excellent work! |

->> HA!
No there was (western wear) dress code for the PBR event in Anaheim
Would have been cool to buy some cowboy duds ...though I am not much of a boots-guy. I'd stumble around carrying all of my gear and boing up and down stairs, probably fall down and not get up. I'm a New Balance kind of guy when it comes to shoe - wear. |

The project was made in SoundSlides.
However I edited the natural audio and interviews in Final Cut Pro.
(I could write an entire article on using SoundSlides vs. Final Cut Pro for multimedia projects!) |

You say "(I could write an entire article on using SoundSlides vs. Final Cut Pro for multimedia projects!)"
I say.. please do ! That sounds like it would be super-useful. I still struggle lining up my audio without an easy "thumbnail" preview of what's been said. I've even considered getting someone to transcribe my longer audio cuts so I can easily find the quotes I'm looking for. |

->> Pretty cool photos. Speaking as one who has spent many years shooting bull riding, bull riding is more difficult to shoot than most people realize. There's a funky timing in shooting bull riding, especially before the super high iso days when you had to shoot at slower shutter speeds. But once you learn the timing your photos are golden and you can come up with some really creative and unique photos.
This sport is also different in that the bulls are as big of stars as the bull riders - bigger in some cases. So don't forget to tell their stories as well.
Cheers |
