Cheap video/flip cam

->> Hi -- just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a small, cheap video camera. I've seen a handful of models at Adorama, B&H and the like in the $100 range.
I'm looking to make some videos of off-roading trucks and plan to mount the camera(s) on the outside of the vehicles.
I'm looking for decent quality at a bargain price. I don't need or want anything fancy or something that I'd feel guilty about if it should get crunched in action.
Thanks.

| ->> Michael - They are a little more than $100, but the Kodak ZI8 might worth looking into. They have a few more options than the Flip including an external mic input. I was at a workshop yesterday where a few people used them and the footage looked really nice. BTW they shoot HD 1080p. It looks like they have a new camera called a Playsport with some weatherproofing and IS as well. |

| ->> Upon further review, it's not available until April. I'd like to use it next month. |

->> Sony has a couple of cheap HD cams. They are the "Webbie" series. There is one that is about the size of the flip and one that is a bit larger and camcorder shaped.

I think they are $150 for the flip style and $200 for the camcorder style. |

->> Hey Michael, I have the kodak Zi8 and my wife and I love it for easy, quick, brainless shooting.
As mentioned above, the main reasons I went with it vs a flip are....
1080
External Mic input
Image Stabilization
SD card slot (whereas the flip has internal/fixed storage that you can't change).
The footage is great out of it in daylight scenarios. In darker situations, it gets a little noisy, but that's to be expected from a $150 camera.
Hope that helps. |

->> It's been brought to my attention (courtesy of fellow SSer Matthias Krause) that the "rolling shutter effect" might cause a problem for video that moves fast in any direction (and by that a wobbly camera would exacerbate that problem. He suggested a camra that uses a CCD chip as opposed to a CMOS one.
Any thoughts? Have any of you used a flip-type camera for shooting off-roading or the like?
Again, this is basically for me and the guys I hang with -- it's not for a client. |
