Nikon D200 ERR in cold weather

->> Last night I shot a concert with a newly acquired, used, D200. The camera had been in a 20 degree van for a few hours. The first time I pressed the shutter the viewer went black. Pushing it again seemed to complete the frame, but no image recorded. The top info screen had a blinking ERR. After the camera warmed up it was fine. Does this indicate a shutter heading toward a breakdown?

->> I would repeat the same situation but do not store the battery in the camera. Take the cold camera, put in a warm battery and see what happens.

->> John every Nikon that I have had a shutter go on exhibited that very same pattern. It could also simply be that the cold caused the shutter to contract enough that it was binding or hanging. At 20 degrees any grease that is being used to lube moving parts is more like peanut butter than grease so it is conceivable that the entire issue is cold related.

->> what about a camera powering on and off? Can that be due to the cold too? A friend experienced this last night with his D700 (I seem to remembering this happened once with my D2X but can't remember the weather conditions)

->> Here in Minnesota 20 degrees seems like a heat wave. I'll try the battery idea. The camera came with these batteries and I have no clue how old they are.
Thanks everyone!

->> My D200 does exactly that if the vertical grip comes even slightly loose. Just another thought...

->> Are you sure the camera screen wasn't saying "Brrr" from the cold.

->> The D700 will show you the overall condition of the battery in the menu item "Battery info" in the "Set Up" menu.

->> Bryan H. has an excellent point. Had the same thing happen to me with a D200. It was a lose battery & vertical grip. Felt tight. I crank the screw barely moving it, was afraid I was over cranking it, but it solved the problem.
