Interesting, but is it really anything that hasn't been discussed here before?

The article discussed Al Berger, a photographer who found his Christmas party business gone. Instead, he found a niche by shooting rodeo.

The trick in all of this is to move up. Do things a consumer with a digital camera can't do. As you and I have discussed previously, you're as good a example as anyone on this board for niche marketing. A GWC cannot produce images of body building that comes anywhere close to what you do.

A local newspaper publisher had been a proponent of "let's not give them too much quality" - a phrase I hate as much as anything. Recently the word went out that there will be no more cutting. Why? Because in the long run it impacts one's ability to generate revenue and profits. It's a very slipperly slope that I warned them about. The light bulb finally went on, evidently : They have recently introduced a new publication that will also help their revenues that there was no competition for in the marketplace.

Produce high quality work. Produce niche work that is unusually high in quality and can't be easily copied by GWC. The old marketing slogan I learned in my marketing classes in B school "there's riches in niches" still holds true.

BTW,if you've never shot bull riding, it's a real rush. Easily the toughest sport out there.

In this market, anything that pays more than what you were doing before and keeps you working is definitely " UP "

->> Michael, Thank you for the very kind words.

Even my niche has been difficult as of late; suffering from the economy, and very much from the dumbing down of the expectations of quality photography. Poorer work is more accepted based on cheaper or free.

But with that said, I have stuck to my pricing levels and not chased my way to the bottom. And in the last couple of months I have sought to further define my niche while broadening into other areas that I personally find interesting and more unique.
