New member looking for a little critique...

->> I am a new member here and would love to hear the good, bad and the ugly regarding the pics I have online here.

I am always looking to improve, so this feedback would be extremely valuable since I find myself shooting a number of different situations.

If this type of question is out of line on these boards, please feel free to tell me that, too. Still trying to figure it all out.

Again, your criticism, suggestions and thoughts are much appreciated.

->> Hey Jason,

Welcome aboard. I have family in Natrona Heights and Tarentum and lived in Brackenridge myself for about three years growing up. I definitely recognize many of the locations for your shots.

As for your request, you have a lot of great moments. Some of the images are kind of weak because it looks like almost every one was shot from a standing position. Get down low and those same images are likely to have much more impact and dynamism.

Something you will hear preached here over and over is clean backgrounds. Only two or three of yours are clean. I speak from experience here because when I first applied to Sportsshooter (and was rightly rejected by Mr. Brad Mangin), most of my backgrounds were a mess. A year later, I tried again with success and it was no coincidence that my portfolio contained much stronger images because there was less clutter. Again, taking a knee or going even lower to the ground (
http://www.sportsshooter.com/news_story.html?id=1719) will help you out.

Image 10 has great potential but needs a. cropping or b. a home plate vantage point to really show off Anderson's "unique delivery."

Hope some of this helps.

I appreciate your comments. I looked at them again and I never realized that nearly all of these WERE taken standing. Out of the thousands of photos we take, I chose almost all "standing" shots. Thanks for pointing that out. In the future, I'll have to remember that.

Another good point on the backgrounds. I am one of those guys so caught up in getting the "moment" that I tend to forget about the composition of the image. I guess I rely on my 2.8 lenses.

Anyhow, thanks for taking your time. If you are ever back in the area, shoot me an email. It's heffranphoto@gmail.com.
