->> ...anyone using this set up?
I have been looking around for a simple system for using the 5D MkII as a video kit and keep coming back to the iDC UBoat Commander Kit III.
Any hands on opinions?
Thanks

->> While on the topic of 5D Video...
...any opinions on the Sony WCS999 wireless mic & Rode VideoMic for a gathering audio with a quick & dirty kit 5D video kit? |

| ->> I have the UBoat Commander Kit and I think it's great. Very well designed. Also, Bruce Dorn is a great guy. Not to mention a damn good shooter of both stills and video. We was very helpful to me when a bought the rig. |

Thanks for the input. I know Bruce and know he's a nice guy and a great shooter...which was another reason why I assumed the UBoat Kit might actually be well designed.

->> Hi Steven,
WARNING: Biased opinion :)
Check out the Cube Media Cage on my website. www.MarksPHOTOtools.com
There are two versions. The version one is for a gripped DVSLR (5D2, 7D, D300s and D3s, etc.) The version two is a lower profile and works with DVSLRs with out grips.
If you are interested I will be happy send you one to demo.
Take care,
Mark Watkins

| ->> Steven, I have the Rode Video Mic, for use with the D3S.. good mic, but if you plan to use it with a BeachTec, it does not put out enough signal for the meters on it. You need a higher power shotgun, or wait for the powered Beachtec due this year. |

->> I've been using Mark's media cage for a few weeks now... it's very useful as I can connect all the crap you have to have to shoot good video/audio to the cage and then just grab the big fat motorcycle grip and go. I love shooting especially wide angle glass to it to get pov stuff and crazy low angles-- it let's me "fly" like the big boyz... I got Mark to attach and additional hot-shoe on mine so I can run a mike off one and a an Bescor LED array on the other.. works pretty well for me...

->> Robert,
Thanks for the info on the BeachTek gear. I had looked at BeachTek but figured I'd come back to exploring those later on.
At the moment I am building a quick & dirty kit on a limited budget (around US$3,500) |

->> Mark,
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out and send you an email.
I have a few questions as my plan for jumping into DSLR video largely involves writing about it on Flying With Fish. I get many questions about traveling with DSLR video rigs and I simply don't have the experience...so I plan to give myself the experience so I can address this somewhat constant stream of questioning.
It seems I have been a purest looking at stills only to long (not to mention I hate outsourcing video for emerging media clients ... its hard to be a control freak and outsource parts of contracts :0) ) |

| ->> These all look pretty similar in concept to director Mike Figgis' FigRig (http://services.manfrotto.com/figrig/) which works really well with an HDV or similar camera. |

| ->> Another good wireless lav system is Sennheiser's G2 (recently replaced by the G3). $500 get you a mic with transmitter and receiver. |

| ->> We use the Sony UWP V1's and they have been great in whether it's used with an Edirol recorder or a Canon video camera. I think it the kit is just over $500. |

->> Speaking of wireless mics, be aware that the the FCC has banned the use of those mics in the 700Mhz band effective June 12.
"Under a new FCC rule, anyone who uses a wireless microphone that operates in the 700 MHz Band will have to stop operating their wireless microphone by June 12, 2010. To see if this law affects your wireless microphone, check our Manufacturers Equipment list."

->> I've been using Mark's media cube for a while now and it's working great for me. I ended up ordering one from him and had him add an additional hot-shoe mount for an LED light as well as for the wireless receiver for audio. I put a manfroto quick release plate on the bottom of it so I can literally pull the whole thing out of a case already assembled and just choose the lens I want. This combination, with the Zacuto viewfinder, is really kickin' and I can put the whole thing on a tripod for pans in seconds, without disconnecting any wires, etc...
I got the taller one as I use not just a 5D for video but also the 1DM4 when I need 60P. As Jim Colburn also commented, the Sennheiser G series mics are outstanding, and work killer with the 5DMII for interviews, etc... I'm using the latest pre-amp from juiced link and while I love those guys, they make an improvement every three months and they drive me crazy as I always seem to have the second to last product for DSLR audio.
In the big picture, my still photography has been slow the last two years and I thank God that I had the inclination to learn video three years ago (not that I'm done learning video) as it's provided much needed cash flow during this recession. |
