ASMP multimedia/ video class

->> Just got back from an ASMP multimedia and video class in Indy that I found out about as a result of an email from a sponsor of SS, Roberts.

Sharing their knowledge were Paula Lerner and Gail Mooney. Paula is experienced with soundslides etc multimedia and Gail's experience is in video.

Some of the info was a repeat of other info I've learned in the 4 years I've been doing soundslides, but it's always good to get a new perspective and more info.

It's impossible to cover everything in a four hour class on the two topics, but they did a very nice broad strokes presentation. It was particularly helpful to see their p.o.v. as they do journalistic, corporate, non-profit and personal work. As a newspaper journalist (for how long?) it's good to see how they make it work for them.

I know they've got some other classes coming up together and Gail has some classes just talking about video in the future.

As I'm not a ASMP member it was $75 but I felt like it was totally worth it - considering my company won't actually send me away to learn anything. And it's cheaper if you're a member.

Don't mean this to sound like an infomercial but if you're looking for some more info about the subjects it's a good way to ask some questions, see the projects they've done.... and bit easier to understand when you're in the same room as the person explaining it, rather than trying to figure it out solo on the web. The info is on ASMP.org website.

It is nice to know that there is money to be made doing that kind of stuff for clients other than newspaper and that they pay much better for it.

I may have to buy soundslides and an audio recorder for myself. I do slide shows all the time with sound slides and have done a few with audio that I recorded with my D3. While not ideal for audio gathering it worked OK. I am looking at the Zoom H2. I may have to step up and get the H4n or the Olympus LS-10.

Gail Mooney, along with her partner Thomas Kelly, run Kelly/Mooney Productions, a visual communications company in New Jersey. Gail has 30 years of experience in still photography, shooting for international magazines, major corporations and advertising agencies. Gail started shooting 35mm motion footage for stock in 1996, and in 1999 started producing and shooting video projects. Since then, her company has become fully integrated with multimedia. She has also produced two short documentaries: The Delta Blues Musicians and Through the Hearts and Hands of Children about the New Jersey Youth Symphony. She is currently working on a multimedia documentary about two diverse high school groups retracing the Civil Rights Freedom Ride of the 1960's. Gail sees many opportunities for still shooters to expand into video and multimedia, and she feels that this is just the beginning of how technology will transform how we, as visual communicators, will deliver our message in the future.
