What to wear to shoot a governor's inauguration?

->> Hey guys,
This is a pretty weird question to ask, but I'm not sure who to turn to. I'm shooting the inauguration of the new Virginia governor, Bob McDonnell tomorrow. I've shot political rallies before, but never an official ceremony. Is there any sort of expected dress code for photographers?
There's no mention of anything in the press packet, and I'm a guy, which is probably important.
I was planning on wearing jeans and a nice sweater, but I can kick it up a notch if need be. Just don't want to sway too far in the wrong direction.
Thanks! |

| ->> Don't worry about what other people are going to wear, worry about what you are going to wear. Start out with no jeans and no tennis shoes. Personally I would wear a suit. |

| ->> You can never over-dress, you can very easily under-dress. Dress pants with shirt and tie MINIMUM. |

->> this is an INAUGURATION for the STATE GOVERNOR.
a suit would be appropriate. you want to blend in, not stand out. |

->> A suit. And a tie. Preferably dark. Shined shoes. Shave. Look and act professional. Same for funerals of notable individuals, fallen police officers, firefighters and members of the armed forces where dignitaries are expected to attend. It will all go a long way with the government officials at the inauguration and more importantly, their PR people. You'll be surprised how fast you become a familiar face with them at events - and of course you want that familiarity to be a good light.

->> If you are shooting the governor, a kevlar vest with a black ops outfit might make you blend in better with the shadows from which you do the deed. My personal choice is the M40A3 with a Redfield scope.
Okay Homeland...I am being ironic for the word choice for this topic1

->> Actually, I will say more information is needed.
Is this an outside thing where you are among dozens or hundreds on a press riser?
Is this an inside, more intimate thing where it's just a few folks in the capitol rotunda?
If it is an outside thing and you are on a riser and will not be getting anywhere close to the governor then dress nice (dress shirt, khakis) but also for the weather.
If it is more intimate such as in the State House Chamber or any time during the day you will be getting up-close-and-personal then kick it up a notch. |

->> Just so this discussion about clothing can end, I'll update you all. I wore khakis and a nice button-up shirt, no tie, and I was more dressed up than most of the rest of the photographers. The guys working for the governor were wearing suits though.
It was outside, and I was among a dozen or more press photographers set up on a platform.
Also, parades get boring very quickly. |

| ->> It's been a few years, but the last one I shot was an outdoor event and it was bitter cold. I donned dress slacks, tie and a heavy coat to withstand the temperatures. I doubt you're going to have that problem in Va., but I would say the minimum would be dress slacks, tie, even a coat if you have it. |

->> I have a dark suit for "formal" occasions I have to shoot....If I can shoot without a coat and tie, I'll be in black shirt, black pants and black shoes...
I like to pretend I blend into the background...good thing I don't own any Camo !! |
