->> I just thought I'd start a thread to see what SSers were planning on attending the Northern Short Course March 11-13 in New Brunswick, NJ.
Maybe this will help others (including myself) find some people to room with and save on hotel costs.
I hope to see some of you out there! |

->> I'll be there. I'm looking forward to it.
Here's a site for everyone to register. If you've never been to this conference before, you should definitely check it out. There will be a lot of useful seminars, for both staffers and freelancers.

| ->> I will be there...I've been to it for the past few years and it is extremely informative. John Harrington's seminar on the business side of photography is extremely informative...the cost is worth it just for his sessions. |

->> If you are looking for a great price on a room AT the hotel that is hosting the short course, Hotwire.com allows you to reserve hotels by location and the number of "stars", but they don't tell you which hotel you are getting.
They had a listing for a 4 star hotel with tennis courts in New Brunswick for $65 a night.
Turns out that the only 4 star hotel in New Brunswick with tennis courts is the Hyatt that is hosting the NSC.
With taxes and fees it come to $80 a night which is considerably less than the group rate I saw earlier.
I'm looking forward to John's seminar... |

->> I'll be there on Thursday during the day...
As a Rutgers Alum, I've got to suggest that some of the out-of-towners take a few minutes out of their time in Hub City to check out the Zimmerli museum which is only a few blocks away from NSC and currently has an exhibit of Soviet Art Photography from the 70s-80s:
http://www.zimmerlimuseum.rutgers.edu//exhibitions/?state=current
And a public service because hotel food is utterly forgettable:
Old Bay is right across the street from the NSC. Good NOLA food and a killer beer list.
On and near George Street (2 blocks from NSC)
-Tumulty's: Great dark Irish pub with dark Irish beer, open timber ceiling with Lionel trains racing around.
-Soho on George: Good latenight bar menu and martinis
-Makeda: Great Ethiopian.
-There's a new upscale middle-east joint with full license that I haven't had a chance to try yet, but looks nice.
-Harvest Moon: Brewpub. Good beer. Food was worse than forgettable last time I ordered anything there aside from a pint.
Clydz: Martinis and med students, along with lawyers and a solid menu.
On Dennis St (5 minute walk from NSC): Frog and Peach: rated one of best restaurants in NJ. Been there twice recently. Once it was great, once (NYE prix fixe) it was terrible. Bar menu shows serious promise.
Deltas: Upscale Southern comfort food: BBQ Ribs, chicken and waffles, collard greens, gorgeous bar area, great entertainment.
Easton Ave (5 minute walk from NSC):
Cluck U Chicken: The original. BYO.
Stuff Yer Face: Bolis, and beer. Back in my time at RU, a guy named Mario Batali was building the bolis here.
Up Hamilton St via Cab ride: Sophie's. Great authentic French Bistro in front. GLB-whatever dance club attached.
If you are taking a train from NYC to the NSC and walking from NJT station to NSC, sit in the last cars of the Trenton-bound train and head right as you exit the trains to drop down to street level via the stairs (no elevator or escalator at this end of the station) to cut a few blocks off your walk. (It will drop you to street level at George and Somerset Sts for Google Walking direx.)
If anyone has any other New Brunswick related questions, ping me. I've been in orbit around the hub city for a looooong time ;) |
