->> This may be of interest to folks like me that use Pelican cases to carry their photo gear. Maybe I am the only one that didn’t know about this, but here goes.
I have the Pelican 1560 as my main case to carry most of my kit. I like it because it is hard sided and lockable. I also have the Pelican 1510 carry-on case that performs several tasks including carrying longer lenses, extra gear when necessary, or as a smaller carry-on case when traveling.
During a shoot this weekend, another photographer had the Pelican 1510 with a lid divider replacing the foam that normally goes in the lid (he had the divider set in the main compartment just like I use in my 2 cases). It is basically an organizer kit for the 1510 lid. Very COOL!
I just got one for my 1560 case and it is awesome. It allows me to use that lid space for the numerous odd things I need in my camera bag, and allows me to free up space in the main compartment for more... Junk.
I bought the organizer for the 1560 on Amazon, but it is available from multiple sources: http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-Lid-Organizer-1560-Cases/dp/B000POWJ6E
And here is a link to the organizer for the 1510 case: http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-1519-Organizer-1510-Case/dp/B0014D2WGW/ref=pd...
They also make a 1510 with a laptop carrier in the lid. But I called to see if I could just buy that insert, and that case (1510LOC) has a larger lid, so you can’t just buy the insert.
That would be AWESOME to have a 1560 lid organizer with a laptop insert. I often just take out the foam anyway and stick my Macbook Pro in either the 1560 or 1510 lid. |

| ->> Hi Bryan. Great Find. I have also invested into these for my 1510. I highly recommend this organizer as it has saved me from stuffing extra batteries where ever there is room. I now placed them into the zipped mesh pockets and not have to worry about if they will damages anything. The installation is not hard at all. A must have for all who carry every little accessory they own. |

->> I've been using this for a couple of years - a tip......they give an option to secure it to the lid....forget the Velcro, or tape and use small self tapping screws - the points for receiving then are in the lid. Way more secure way to keep the lid organizer in place. Mine have been shipped all over the world ( usually fed ex ahead of my travel) with never a problem or damage. The lid organizer is truly one of the best options you can get - all the small bits and pieces are there , visible and easy to get to.

->> Yes, the installation with the screws was easy. The mounts are already on the cases, and they provide self tapping screws. It took like 2 minutes to install.
Someone also emailed me asking about concerns with protection without the foam in the lid. Here was my response:
---------------------------
I was concerned about that too (protecting the contents). Keep in mind, I use the divider set in the main compartment on both my 1560 and 1510. Not the pick-n-pluck foam. I gave up on that foam years ago. It is very protective, but it is impossible to keep it straight when always switching out equipment depending on what I need to shoot.
I guess the protection depends on how you pack your case. Personally, I pack mine CRAMMED full! :) Most lenses are covered by other items in my 1560. For example, I have my 70-200 laying down, and an SB-800 on top. I have a short 12-24 in one compartment, and the SU-800 commander sitting sideways on top. One of my camera bodies is protected by a fold-up gray card. I do have another body exposed, but I have the lid organizer so packed with cords, batteries, etc., it easily takes up all the slack in the case lid.
I originally considered getting some thin foam or bubble wrap, and putting it between the lid organizer and the contents. But I really don't know if that is necessary. |

->> Studio Cruzer makes a really nice laptop divider for the 1510. The only problem is they only sell them with new 1510s for the steep price of $280.
Has anyone found anything like this online? I just saw this a few days ago and might try to make one myself.

->> Brian: Yes, I saw that too and that was my thought: Try and make my own. That's why I bought the divider for the 1560, and might try and make something like that for the 1510.
I was going to contact that company to see if they just sell that laptop insert, but it looks like it may be a more sophisticated mount than just screws. Plus, that insert centers the laptop, which does waste some space. I think I could mount it lower, and have room either for a power cord, or other goodies.
My 15" MPB in a sleeve fits perfectly in that lid now. I put it down low and have room above for other stuff. I do that all the time when using that case. But it would be nice to have that extra padding. |
