7d/5d footage to go along with my SS article

->> I was hoping to have some of the 7d footage I shot in Japan together in time for my SS article but it just didn't happen.
I just received a short teaser / trailer for the film I was shooting. This was all shot on the 7d with the 17-55m f2.8 IS, 70-200mm IS and a little with the 17-35mm f2.8 and 50mm 1.4. I purposely shoot at higher f-stops since a lot of it was handheld. I also feel like just because you can shoot at f1.4, doesn't mean you should.
Life As Dad - Teaser (be warned its a little sad)

Also, I posted this a while ago but here is a montage from China on the 5d for comparison.

I also mentioned ACing a PBS documentary, it happen to be "This Emotional Life," which premiered last week. If you skip past the first few minutes and the Intro titles you'll get to the Grand Station footage I was refering too.

->> Hi Andrew,
Great work. I'm contemplating purchasing the 7D, because some clients have asked me to do video work. I was wondering what sound equipment you were using? Microphones, which type, etc.? Were you also collecting audio or was there someone else doing that? Also what other equipment outside of lenses were you using?
The reason I ask, is because I don't think the camera is the only expense, am I correct?
I would love to see "Life as Dad," it looks like a sad but very powerful story. Again, great work.
thanks,
Armando |

->> Great Andrew,
I am going to Peru next week to produce a documentary with my 5D Mk II and a 7D (I might be getting a 1D IV as a loaner, not positive yet) and was worried about sound, so I might look into the H4 to go with my wireless mike system.
I might also be contacting you for some tips on using the gear!
You might be interested in this if you haven't seen it yet. I am ordering it today.
Its a dolly that fits to your tripod:

->> On the road filing, but will check out the footage. I am glad for the timing of your post, as I had to decide between the 5D and 7D very quickly.
I ended up with the 7D and hope I don't regret it...24fps is cool though...have a 15mm if I want to go super-wide. I hear it's about a stop difference in light from the 5D in low-light conditions.
I also shoot sports, so factored this in as it will be my second body and has faster frame per second rate with the built-in motor.
Tough choice on the fly!
Thanks for the info. Anyone else have experience shooting the 7D? |

| ->> yup, i noticed the difference in about a stop... 640 iso was about the highest i went in video on the 7d... while on the 5d i would push it to 800 / 1250. Yes, you can go much higher, but it does introduce a lot of grain. |

->> This is one of the solutions to the no xlr problem on the 5d II.
http://www.studio1productions.com/xlr-bp.htm
I've seen a few others like this on the market but at $139 it's hard to beat. It's a little cumbersome to have it strapped to your belt but it's a fairly elegant solution to both the xlr and levels control problem. |

| ->> yes, but you have no true audio out or controls on the camera. There is also no way for a sound guy to run sound into the camera and be confident its recording at the right levels. |
