Nikon MB-D10 Battery Grip
Justin Sorensen, Photographer

->> I have the MB-D10 battery grip for the D700 and need to purchase either another EN-EL3e battery (to go in the holder it came with) or the BL3 Battery-Chamber Cover for the EN-EL4 battery (the d2H battery which I currently have).

The new En-EL3e battery is about $48 while the BL3 Battery-Chamber Cover is about $40.

What I'm more interested in though is if anyone could recommend based on which of the two batteries lasts longer or performs better, my hunch is the EN-EL4?

Thanks for responding.

-Justin

->> Justin,

Go with the BL3 and use the en-el4 battery. Not only does it last longer, it boosts your frame rate up as well. If you don't want to buy a bl3, you can cannibalize the AA battery pack that came with the grip like I did (when the BL3 was impossible to find):

->> Yes, go with the BL3 Battery-Chamber Cover and EN-EL4. To get an idea of what your speed will be, find the AA battery pack that came with the camera and try that instead of using the EN-EL3. That will make up your mind as to which to buy.

->> Thanks guys.

I didn't realize only the EN-EL4 boosted the FPS, I thought both batteries did. I'll definitely go with the BL-3 cover. I did notice however that the EN-EL4 works and sort of stays put without the BL-3, but yes, I will be getting the cover for it.

->> I use the BL3 cover with a EN-EL4 battery in my D300. It boosts the rate and is much better and easier to charge the battery than a group of AA batteries. I found the BL-3 new for $28.95 plus shipping a place called Photo 4 Less. Found it online. I bought the EN-El4 for $60. I should have just bought a new one. Even though it shows zero like it was new, it is not. And the charger I gave $70 for on ebay.

->> Not only does using the BL3 and EN-EL4 provide better FPS and battery life but one of the subtleties that I have noticed is that the autofocus speed and performance is much improved with all lenses, especially with the longer telephoto lenses.
