->> I'm shooting promotional things for an up and coming country artist, and I have no idea how much to charge them for the shots. Anybody have any experience with that aspect of photography and business?

->> 1- Go to NPPA.org and run the cost of doing business calculator.

2- Ask the person what EXACTLY do they want the photos for NOW? Are they using them on a website? Myspace/Facebook? billboards? 5000 flyers? Promotional things could mean one thing today, and something completely different tomorrow. To be fair ask them what their budget for the project is.

3- Get a copy of fotoquote (or use the online version, if you have a photoshelter account). Punch in the information you got from question #2.

4- Take all the information you got from questions 1,2 and 3, write a contract and estimate accordingly. Be prepared to walk away if necessary if they balk at your estimate as well.

->> Your assignment sounds more Commercial than PJ or News.

Look at ASMP.org, they are more directed to Commercial Photography.

But also communicate with your client and make sure they are aware of your pricing and that you are within their budget. Don't price yourself too low and hurt yourself and your fellow shooters, but if you price yourself way too high, you might get the job this time, but you might never get hired again by this client.
