Mac Backup
Shane Psaltis, Photographer

->> I am looking for software that will keep 2 drives mirrored. I want to have two external hard drives were one is the one that I write all my images to and a second that will be a complete copy of the original. Is there a way to write your images to the backup drive automatically. I do not want it to write everything over again I only want it to copy the new stuff I add each day or week. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if there has already been a thread on this if so please let me know.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Shane

->> +1 for Super Duper.

I use it to make a bootable copy of my internal MacBook Pro HD to a partition on my OWC Firewire 800 external, and also to copy the Photo Archive on the same Firewire drive to a USB drive on my desk and a Western Digital passport drive.

Every night SuperDuper! auto-magically compares the two drives and updates only new and updated files rather than the whole drive.

->> Hi Shane-

I use ChronoSync for this very purpose, as well as for syncing my desktop to my laptop and vise versa.

They are at

I also use SuperDuper as well for making clone backups of my main hard drives. Can't be over redundant!

Hope these suggestions help.

->> You can set up a mirrored RAID in disk utility that should do what you want.

If you ever need to copy a drive over a network (like automatically mirror your system with a drive on a server) then you should go with ChronoSync.

->> your best bet is probably just to do a two-drive mirrored RAID set. these setups are getting more and more affordable, and it doesn't function on the user end any differently than your existing drives. it's just twice as safe. consider the time saved on your workflow not having to manually manage your backup single-drive units.

->> Chronosync is excellent, I use it to back up from multiple areas on multiple drives to one large Drobo volume. It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be using rules. For example, I can set it to only back up or exclude folders by their label color within a volume, or I can exclude filetypes, etc. Scheduling can be set on a clock, or every time a drive is plugged in, or on click.

But if you want dead simple mirroring? RAID is easy enough and OWC always has external RAID drives available. Just buy one, copy over your files, and you're all done.

->> I'm with Scott - If you're on a Mac you can just use Disk Utility. It's an app that's in the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder.

Basically, after it's set up, the two mirrored drives will appear as one on your desktop, but the data copied to it will be copied to both. The thing to be aware of though is that it behaves as a true mirror, in that if you erase files from one drive it will erase them from both.

->> I have used the Mac Disk utility to mirror 2 external Western Digital drives in the past and never had a problem, recently though I picked up a Newertech Guardian Maximus from OWC (www.macsales.com) and I am really impressed with it. I bought it empty and added 2 WD 1tb drives myself which saved some dough.

->> If you are on a Mac why not just use time machine to back up both the main drive and you external drive to one large external drive. I use a large 2t usb drive to back up all four smaller drives in the MacPro Tower. It also save you if you delete a file by accident as you can go back a few days or weeks depending on how much space is used in the back up.

->> A program similar to SuperDuper is Carbon Copy Cloner. The guys at OWC recommended it to me. functionality is quick and simple - I have not used superduper, but they look similar. CCC is free! http://www.bombich.com/

Good luck
