80-200 Rubber-quick fix?
Joshua Brown, Photographer

->> I have an older Nikon 80-200, with a focus ring and zoom ring. The rubber on the zoom ring is loose and even seems like it is stretched as it sags just a little. It makes changing to focal length very difficult, especially in gloves. Is there a safe adhesive to put on the rubber that won't cause any negative effects. I thought of rubber cement ect, but I'm not sure it's safe. If I can do a cheap and safe fix, I'll do it at home. If not, I'd rather be safe than sorry and send it in for repair. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

->> Same thing happened to mine, I used a thin strip of gaffer's tape to attach the rubber to the ridge at the back of the ring. I didn't have any luck with adhesives behind the rubber.

->> Go to Home Depot (or other such purveyor) and pickup a roll of fiberglass reinforced carpet tape. The tape is SUPER sticky and the fiberglass makes it easy to remove later without the tape tearing into tiny pieces as you remove it.

One of my guys went to Staples and bought extra wide rubber bands and put one over the ring&grip. That works too.

->> Why not just buy a replacement grip from Nikon? I've replaced rubber grip rings on a Canon 300/2.8L and the part is cheap.

->> I ordered the grip directly from Nikon, less than $10 plus shipping.
