Amazon is shipping and I heard Adorama did too.
How much you want to bet that most Freelance Shooters are going to be some of the last ones to get it and every other GWC in America will have one or two!!

There is something to be said for NPS's Priority Purchase Program, Pros can get the gear they need to do their jobs. Hate to sound like a snob, but it sucks that folks I know that need the gear can't find one. |

GWC = Guys With Cameras
MWC = Moms With Cameras
DWC = Dads With Cameras
(typically have day jobs and sell 4x6 photos for $2 or give away pictures at the banquet. They ask TONS of questions on the sideline and badmouth professionals for charging so much)
DPR = Digital Preview http://www.dpreview.com/
OOF =Out Of Focus
Cats in Low Light = Cats in Low Light (Seriously...GWC will shoot pictures of their cats/dogs/whatever in low light (their living room/studio) to show off the features of the camera.
I think these are all accurate.

->> Kevin:
Thanks for the note. I've actually been a fan of Urban Dictionary for years now. But the alphabet soup on here (SS) goes over my head a lot of the time.
I guess I'm more a fan of the irreverent, clever and culturally-relevant definitions contained in the former, and less of the posturing and "make me feel better about myself" stuff I see on here.
But that's neither here nor there.
Anyway, thanks all for the clarifications.
Cheers,
- a guy with a camera who takes many out-of-focus pictures and often snaps photographs of his cats in low light - |

->> "Try calling some stores and see what they tell you!!"
There are only three stores to call: Penn Camera, Roberts and Adorama. The day camera is announced is the day you call one of these three and do a credit card hold for the amount. When the MarkII came out I had mine I believe three days after the hit the shelves. Penn beat our Roberts by an hour. When I bought the 40D, same thing, had one three days after the stores put them out on the shelf. In that match Roberts beat out Penn. The score is tied at 1-all. The next op will be when the Mark IV (I don't need a mark 3 or 5 and by the time the 5 comes out service on the original MK2 will be discontinued by Canon.
While I haven't bought anything yet from Adorama, now that Jeff Synder is there I've added them to my release day call list. |

->> While I appreciate the sponsors here at SS I think its simplistic to claim they are the only place to buy equipment. We are all part of numerous communities including the online community of sportsshooter.
I also do my best to support local independent businesses. You know, the places people go and put fingerprints all over the brand new equipment, ask tons of questions and monopolize salespeople's time before going online and using their new-found knowledge to buy their products cheaply without paying sales tax (which is technically illegal by the way)
If one of the sponsors has what you need, great. If they don't, there's no reason to shame people in to avoiding other resources. |

->> Eric,
You do have a point, but.... Some of our sponsors ARE Brick & Mortar stores, they are just in another state!!
But I would never say don't buy locally, I often do.
BTW, when you buy out of state, it's your obligation to pay "Use Tax" Not "Sales Tax"

| ->> I have no problem with any of the sponsors. I just have a great relationship with one store in particular and they take care of me. Anytime a new camera is announced they know to automatically put me at the top of the list along with a friend of mine. He actually turned me on to them and has had a longer relationship with them. I'm going to assume that many of our sponsor stores have great relationships with a lot of working pros. So when a new camera is announced how do they decide who goes to the top? |

->> I'm not doubting Clark's success with his release-day strategy, and I'm not questioning the value of dealing with any of the site sponsors.
I will say my experience has been somewhat different with waiting lists, however, and I won't name names here, but you can contact me if you want to know. I've now been on lists for two different models with the same sponsor; the first time, another sponsor had the camera available in regular stock -- had filled its waiting list and had more on hand -- two weeks before I was contacted by the other. Let's just say I already had used the camera for a couple of assignments before that call came from the first sponsor.
This time I'm reading on this site that the sponsor from whom I bought that camera already got a good-sized shipment and is filling orders. I've been on a waiting list with that first sponsor since midnight when the camera was announced. But I'll bet my $4,995 that I'll be spending it again with the one I bought from the last time. |

->> Monty, sorry for the confusion and yes, Eric Issacs, there are more than three store folks can contact to be put on waiting lists to purchase new gear. The three I listed are my recommendation simply because when I was gear chaser as many who are posting to this thread are, they provided far and above the kind of service I expected being a nobody, meat and tater shooter out of the midwest.
Oh, and Brian is right about my 'roundabout' :-)
I also re-read my post and I made mistake - sorry - I meant to say the three stores will be the first that I call when Canon announces the Mark V.
Yamil wrote, "Forgot Sammy's, they're a Sponsor too!!"
I didn't forget Samy's. My experience with them has underwhelming when I tried to purchase items from them in the past.
You don't have a choice but to do business with a camera a vendor that calls you back within portions of an hour of leaving a message instead of days or weeks if that. I sure other photographers have received average to excellent service from Samy's as well as others have from shops around the country. That's great! I've never had the opportunity with Samy's despite my attempts in the past during the three year period when I was acquiring equipment.
Roberts and Penn have met my needs in timely manner for eight years and until their level of service proves otherwise, they will always be my first choice for new gear when I'm in the market for it. My post was not to be a directive, but a glowing recommendation for the two outfits that always exceeded my expectations and tip for those still chasing gear can use to speed up the acquisition process for the camera equipment they desire. |
