->> A quote from the story:
"The image was pulled from our site because of the NBA," Getty spokeswoman Cynthia Edorh said. "Legally, the NBA has the right to pull any of their images as part of the contract with Getty."
Wow. |

->> What a joke.
Now do you see why it's such a bad idea for a league to have so much pull on a photo agency. If this was 20 years ago Getty (or any photo agency) would of told them to "bugger off" |

Once again, I'm living in seclusion. |

->> The best line from the Washington Post story:
"In exchange for access, Getty has no editorial control over the pictures it transmits to the media. That allows league officials to shape, and sometimes protect, the sport's image, given Getty's global reach and the media's considerable appetite for photos. NBA officials, who apparently found the image embarrassing as the Arenas case has drawn growing national attention, were able to spike it." |

->> "...Upon the request of news organizations, we made the photo available for their editorial use and it will remain available."
In other words:
We stood to loose thousands of dollars in licensing/royalties. '...we thought the actions depicted in the photo were insensitive given the circumstances' but our action was insensitive relative to needs of the potential revenue stream from this image. |

->> From the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/08/sports/basketball/08photo.html?ref=basket...
"The N.B.A., for instance, runs NBAE, which hires photographers to take pictures at its games. The league hired Getty Images to distribute NBAE’s photos, including the one in which Arenas was caught joking with his teammates.
Other than the credit, which reads “NBAE, via Getty Images,” the photo looks like one taken by a news agency..." |
