Layover in Paris

->> As I make my way to Kenya this Thursday, I have about a 10 hour layover in Paris. I arrive Friday morning and leave later in the day. Figure it would be nice to step out of the airport for a few hours and maybe see a little bit of Paris.
I have decided to try out the train since I read that it is one of the fastest, easiest and cheapest ways to get to downtown Paris from the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.
I figure I have about 5-6 hours before I need to head back to the airport, so does anybody who has been to or lived in Paris have any suggestions? I am looking for stuff that is near a rail stop since I hope not to get to lost. Any help would be great and much appreciated.
Also if any of our members in Paris would like to meet up for a little bit, let me know.
Thanks Josh |

->> Most will tell you to go to the Louve if you're into art, but the D'Orsay across the street was much more to my liking. It's exhibits are from the 18th century and on, and it's in a converted train station. Simply beautiful.
And any french bakery/bistro at breakfast time works, too :).
I love Paris. My wife and I have more than once considered one way tickets...... |

->> Ignore Michael, you don't have enough time to see the Louvre or the Musee d'Orsay and do it justice (besides, he can't spell Louvre). With the limited time you have, I would think the best use of it would be to take take a train into the heart of Paris and just wander around. Grab a bite and something to drink in a cafe, or get a little picnic from various shops and go sit on a park bench and soak it in. It really is a different city. I grew up in a small town and never liked large cities until I spent time in Paris.
Have a great trip. |

->> My advice, from many trips to Paris with the time you have.....
The train takes about 30mins to get into the centre from CDG
Get off the RER at Chatelet, and switch to the Metro yellow line and go to station 'Charles de Gaulle Etoile' this is the Arc de Triomphe, you can then walk down the Champs-Elysees (loads of fantasic french cafe's) towards Place de la Concorde and Jardins des Champs-Elysees which has fountains etc, and view of the Eifel Tower..
It could be stunning this week as we have a huge blanket of snow in this western corner of Europe, just about 1ft fell overnight where I live near London, so Paris could look amazing... |

| ->> Sam, I'm laughing at my spelling this morning. I wrote that last night after 21 hours of being up. It may have impacted my sPeLlinG just a bit. I may have had a couple of drinks to boot watching the Gator Bowl. |

->> Thanks everyone for the advice.
Richard I hope there is a nice layer of snow since it will be my last time seeing snow for a while.
You figure living in the Chicago area I would be sick of snow, but I think I will miss it a little during my time in Kenya. |

->> 1) Get on the RER B train at the airport station and take it to Chatalet
2) Exit the station and head south on Blvd de Sebastopol toward the Ile de la Cite
3) Continue across the Ile (island) until you get to the Left Bank
4) Turn right (west) on the Que Saint-Michel for a walk along the River Seine
5) Stop off at the Musee d-Orsay for a while. Bring your press credentials because that will get you into the museum FOR FREE and you can go to the front of the line...
6) Exit museum and head west again to cross the river at the Pont (bridge) de la Concorde, hard to miss as the Assemblee Nationale (parliament building) will be on your left
7) Cross the bridge and head left up the Ave des Champs-Elyees to the Arc de Triomphe. If you're game you can walk up to the top of the arch for some of the best views in Paris.
8) Catch the RER A line from the Charles de Gualle-Etoille station under the arch, change at Chatalet for the RER B line and head back to the airport.
Pick up something along the way to eat.
Enjoy. Paris is great in the snow. |

| ->> I agree with Dave, the cemetery in the snow would be very cool - I think it would be be even better than it looks in the summer. Doesn't anyone like the tower? I sure did. |

Yes. I've used press ID from my current newspaper in France with no problems. Go in to the ticket desk and show your ID and they'll give you a free ticket or wave you through. It works at any museum (and places like the Papal Palace in Avignon) that receives government money and that's everybody. |

->> The Ile de la Cite is where it all began for Paris. It has a bit of everything. You have great views and quaint shopping opportunities.
Let me know if I spelled anything wrong, ok? |

->> Thanks for all the great advise everyone. I actually just ended up walking around mostly, and going to the top the Arc de Triomphe. It was a really great view of the whole city. Then I took a nice walk over to the Eiffle Tower and hung out there taking pictures for a while.
Since my flight was a little delayed my time was cut pretty short. Still a great 4 hours in Paris.
Thanks Josh |

->> Next time do the five Paris "highs":
Day 1 - Stairs to the top of Notre Dame
Day 2 - Elevator to the top of the Montparnasse Tower
Day 3 - Stairs to the top of the Arc De Triomphe
Day 4 - Elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower
Day 5 - Walk to the top of the hill at Sacré-Coeur
I did this one week, making sure that I was at the top just around sunset. |
