Backup camera 7d or a used 1D mark III?

->> I am in need of a backup camera for covering everything from sports to weddings.
I currently shoot with a 5D Mark 2.
My budget has me looking at the Cannon 7d or picking up a used 1D mark III.
Love the image quality of the 5D Mark 2, but I want a camera that is better suited to sports.
Any thoughts or links to previous discussions? And no, I am not shifting to Nikon.
Thanks! |

| ->> I have both...the used 1D Mark III and a new 7D...of late, I have been using the 7D as my primary, just to see how it would go and frankly, it has been up to the task at an NFL game and at a high school hockey game...the crop factor is to be considered, but the focusing system is much better than that of the III and while I really do not know if it actually shoots 8 fps, I have no complaints on the speed by which it performs...it is not as rugged as the III, but the 7D is tougher than its predecessors and a lot lighter than a Mark III, too. |

->> I would agree with Robert on the most of what he said...
I've been one of the lucky ones however with my focus on both of my MK III.
So for me it was down to the 5d MK II or the 7D.
The video on the 7D won out for me...
The detractions for me from the 7d are actually the size...
I really like to size to weight on the Mk III...
While the 7D seens very small in my hands... I haven't gotten a Battery grip for it yet but I'm sure this will solve that...
As for a crop... It still provides a very nice image...
You will miss the wide angle that you have on the 5D MK II
But, as I said... I chose the 7D, both because I wanted another camera I could put a wide angle on and hang around my neck as a 3rd body and I wanted to start to dabble in video... |

->> Walt,
I think you will love the grip for the 7D. It feels much better then any grip I have used. |

->> I've been using the 7D for about three months now and as my primary for about half of this years NCAA football season and I've been quite impressed. It focuses quickly and tracks on AI Servo pretty well. The 8fps is really nice, thats what originally sold me on the camera, I wanted a smaller body I could use as a backup.
It might not be as rugged as a 1D series, but as Robert said it is built better than a 20/30/40/50D. I had my 7D out in the rain (rain snuck up on me at a soccer game) and it came out fine.
My only complaint would be with the grip, to me it seems a little chunky.
Overall it's been a great buy and I couldn't be happier, for the price it's awesome. |

| ->> If low light is to be considered the mk 111 is better at 3200. I just tested it at a hockey game alongside my mk111 it is usable but the mk 111 is better under tungsten light conditions. If you want a mk111 I am selling one as I await a mk1v soon. David Seelig |

->> I bought a 7d and returned it after a few shoots: there's a certain softness to the images and noise is a little bit of an issue. Maybe I had a bad copy. Over at cinema5d.com there are entire threads that talk about bad/soft/unsharp/noisy 7d cameras.....
But a lot of people seem to like it. Just got a mk3 instead (a late serial version) to use along with mk2N and 5dmk2. |

| ->> I have to agree with Robert. My 7D has a certain image softness to it that I don't care for. The only time my 7D gets used instead of the mk3 is for field sports at iso 400 or under where noise isn't an issue and the extra reach is nice. |

->> Unfortunately, I'm with Robert and Shelby on the 7D.
Functionally, it's a really nice little camera for the price. But in my opinion, the image quality leaves a lot to be desired, both in (un)sharpness and noise.
Coming from a 5DII, I think you would be disappointed. If you were upgrading from a 40D or 50D you would probably love the 7D, though. |

| ->> I haven't used the 7D, so I can't comment on it. But I purchased a used Mk III about six weeks ago and am very happy with it. I trusted the seller (sportsshooter member) who assured me that he'd had no issues with the camera. I'm loving it. |

->> Hi-
For those of you who are talking about unsharpness, are you shooting JPG?
On a potentially related note: Why oh why would you cram 18 megapixels onto a 1.6x sensor? Ugh.
I've shot 8MP Canons for my whole digital life (and used the 4MP 1D a bit), and maybe it's a case of ignorance is bliss, but I have never once wished I had more pixels.

->> Phillip,
I have shot jpg and raw, and the images are as sharp as can be expected.
Image quality is solid and noise is excellent.
I have zero complaints about this camera |

->> For those of you who have had soft images with your 7D, what type of lenses are you using (canon or off brand)?
I have had my 7D for a few months and I am impressed with the image quality and sharpness. |
