Seeking help finding my image in a German Paper
Renay Johnson, Photographer
San Diego | CA | | Posted: 12:35 AM on 01.03.10
->> I thought I would ask for help from German SS members. I found out that a photo of mine was published in the German newspaper Rheinische Post. I would like a copy of the newspaper but the site is in German. I received a check a week ago but I took the picture in March 2009 (Still don't know why it took so long to get paid) so I don't know when the picture was published. In spite of what people think of our President, I would like to try to get a copy of the picture in print since it was the first time I photographed a President. I am seeking help in finding someone at the Rheinische Post who can locate a back copy possibly or even a screen print. If anyone can help me, contac me.

->> The paper has an online edition but it's in German. Tried to translate the page, but not much success translating what I need. It's an image of the President holding the townhall meeting in Los Angeles(March 09). This was Obama's first visit to CA as President and he's wearing his brown suit/red tie. Rarely wears the brown suit so that helps narrow it down.

Download skype if you don't have it and buy some skype minutes. Call the newspaper directly via skype. There is probably at least one person there who likely speaks English. Did you try sending an email?

Were you working for AP when you shot this gig or for RP?

->> Clark: Yes.Those images are from the the event I covered. I looked on the check stub and it just says Barack Obama and has the name of the publication (RP) so I don't know which particular image was used.

->> Go to the "SUCHEN" (search) window and enter Obama März (March.) I don't know if your image will come up, but it does return a lot of hits.

->> To add to Marks wonderful German, townhall is Rathaus which may help narrow your search further.

Out of curiousity have you tried searching under your name ? If they have credited you then it may have been picked up by the search engine !

Another option may be to search for the story as that may have been keyworded better. Hopefully the picture will be in the report.

I've found the following useful, and usually accurate, when trying to translate terms and phrases.

http://translation.langenberg.com/

It gives a wide choice of languages and allows translations in both directions.

Easiest and least time consuming option though is to follow Clarks advice of calling. I expect most, not just one or two, of the staff speak English and in some cases better than many of us !

My thoughts exactly.

Here are the phone and fax numbers. Don't forget to use the correct country codes.

Telefon: 0211 505-0
Fax: 0211 505-1929

I searched the sites news stories and photo galleries and was unable to find the image matching those in the link I posted above. Since we don't know the terms of the license, there is a good chance the image was never posted to the web or had a time limit. Making a skype call or sending an email really is your best bet.

You can send them a message through their site here:
https://www.rp-online.de/info/kontakt/mail.php?tgt=rpbrief&site=rpo

Good luck
