Workflow at a newspaper

->> I noticed the other day that all our photographers do things in a different order and some do things others do not (Levels instead of Curves) so now I am curious What is everyone's PJ workflow like ?

Mine is - PM to ingest and color code then I edit in PS (Curves, Color, Contrast, USM in LAB color ) open the contact sheet again in PM and caption and drop to our server.

->> Just like the old darkroom days, *for the most part,* there is no one right way to process digital images. One of the few exceptions is that all sharpening should be left to the absolute final step before publication, when the image has been sized to its very final publication size.

I don't mess with contrast because the photo desk tones it to their specs, so no need to do it twice.

->> Workflow:

Layoff the photo desk.

Have the art dept./copy editors select and tone photos with no training.

Wonder why paper looks like crap.

->> When I used to work for the local paper here (not a very photo-friendly paper), I drug the images from my CF card (and I should emphasize "my", as they used to provide two 512Mb cards) onto my G4, browsed the images without a file browser (a little time consuming), edit the selected images in PS7. Crop to the hole, or, on a good day, how the image looked best. Next, I adjusted the levels. I prefer levels to curves, I guess because that is how I was taught. I would do basic color correction next, bump up the contrast a bit (for newsprint, not on glossy), sharpen the image, convert to CMYK and load onto the server where it was "tweaked" (and made better or worse depending on who was editing the prepress server that day). I wrote captions and saved them on a different server, where they were dragged on the page by the Graphic Designer.

Crop, levels, slight saturation bump, contrast, dodging (lasso with levels) or dodge tool. select color balance: highlights and bring levels down a touch if needed. Image size 10 inches on long side at 200 ppi. Unsharpen mask.

->> 1.) Ingest into my archive system on my external hard drives (broken up into folders such as "news", "feature", "food", "sports", etc.)

2.) Browse and delete in Bridge.

3.) Star/edit my top 10 favorites for the art director.

4.) Go shoot another assignment.

My personal workflow for my own business includes Lightroom in the first step.

I rarely use Photoshop anymore.
