NHL Winter Classic Shooting Positions?

->> I will be covering the "College Winter Classic" at Fenway on Friday and am wondering if any SS members covered todays game and can give me a heads up about the logistics and shooting positions.
I watched the game today and it seemed to have the same openings as most NHL rinks but only saw a couple photogs shooting at the openings and many empty. I am sure these games will be like the Bean Pot and a ton of photogs.
Any help is appreciated.

->> Dave Sandford has some pretty cool shots on the Getty site from an ice-level camera. Might be good if you fancy dropping a couple of remotes in.

->> Jack,
Thanks for the post and he and others sure do have some awsome images, including an awsome game winner. It does help when the players head straight for the camera doesn't it. Any idea what lense he used, does not look like a fish eye but possible?
I did not notice these openings in the boards while I was watching the game, looks like one in each corner about 10"x24" just above the yellow portion on the boards.
This will be something I will look into and plan for, for sure.
Thanks,
Jim |

->> Geoffrey,
Great to hear from you! Take a look at what Getty got and the ice level openings in the boards, as Jack said above this looks like a great opportunity for a remote. Trying to figure out some details about this with a buddy who produces the Bruins games for NESN.

->> Just recieved a photo from a friend that clearly shows that there are 6 openings in the glass on the bench side at the green Monster end. it does look like this is the same in the other 3 sides but I can't comfirm 100%. This along with some sort of ice level positions looks good.
There are typical folding chairs in front of each so maybe no folding stool like the Garden.
just need to see what is needed to mount the remote...

->> Hey Jim. I was there the other day and there are a ton of openings. Forget the number exactly but think it is over 16 or so. A lot are on the sides which is a bit limiting in terms of angles but still great. Also the holes are very very low so bring a little folding stool or a milk crate. The chairs are too high.
Logistically I have no idea how it will work but they were assigned for the game on Friday with the solo photographers rotating out in and out so everyone had a chance either up above or on the ice. |

->> I was actually at Fenway today and I chatted with the Bruins team photographer a bit about friday.
There are sixteen holes along the boards for ice level, and the assigning of those positions was happening today with Hockey East.
If they are anything like the NHL, and it sounds like they are so far, it's going to be a real challenge to secure a solid spot, much less affix any remotes.
All told it is a real hairball of a job to get any simple open answers from the folks in charge, so best of luck to you.
For my part, I'm still waiting to see if I'm covering the game as well. If so, I'll see you out there.

->> I was there today to shoot 2 youth games. I thought that I counted 6 holes per corner. These holes are L-O-W LOW LOW. Sitting at a chair just wasn't comfortable..... If I was going to have to sit at a hole for a game I'd want to sit on a 5 gal bucket instead of a chair.
There were 2 holes at ice (ground) level behind and to the right of the nets. The was a ton of snow and ice and I didn't see any place to mount a clamp for a remote. I'm thinking a floor plate would be a better way to put a camera there. Bring a tin cup to dig out the spot.
There appears to be a slit window at ice(ground) level at one corner at the same level as the 2 ground holes.
Ice conditions were not great. They have 2 Zambonis but unlike the rinks that I've been shooting the ice never really 'dried'. Walking out there to get a team photo was VERY iffy. The rubber cleats like trainers wear would have been a real plus.
There was also a pipe with a "T" at the top that would allow the mounting of 2 cameras above and behind the net at the 3rd base end of the ice.
I have photos and can post a private gallery if there is any interest. Just not tonight..... |

->> Dominick, Eric,
Thanks for the info. I received a bunch of E-mails today all explaining the procedures. It does sound like it is going to be crazier than the Bean Pot and there seems to be close to triple the amount of glass openings than The Garden, but then again the 6-8 positions that are reserved in the stands at center ice at The Garden don't exist at Fenway.
Eric, I am sure they turned down the compressors and let mother nature help to take care of the ice, save $$$ when you can. Two Zambonis is the norm to do all you can to avoid this situation but only works if the compressor are setup for this and you still need time for the ice to set up. Do like I do when I am doing T+I and shooting tykes action, throw your skates on and get out with the little guys it is a huge help and you can't get better photos and be safer.
The biggest restriction is the bag size that can be brought in, 16x16x8 how am I going to do this? The TT International roller si too big... good thing I did not sell my backpack and shoulder bags, does not say anything about multiple bags so I will have all and get there plenty early.
Hope to see you there! |
