| ->> I don't find this as a topic, but surely it's been discussed. Almost every drive I research has both glowing AND abysmal reviews (I supposed I shouldn't be surprised). If anyone has had particularly good results with a brand or model, I'd appreciate hearing. |

->> if you ask 25 photographers what their favorite HD is, you are bound to get 25 different answers.
For all the LaCie haters out there-I have 14 full, and 2 being used now and I have not had a single issue with any of them (knock on wood:)
I keep thinking about switching to what friends use and love, but then I keep going back to order more of what has served me very well since going digital in 2001 |

->> It seems to me that most threads on this topic seem to gravitate toward a consensus that Western Digital is high on the reliability list. Seagate used to be, but has faltered of late. Stay away from Maxtor.
Again, this is based on what I've gleaned from a number of threads on this topic (though the Maxtor advice is validated by my own experience, and so far, WD has worked well for me). |

->> Dave,
Are you looking for a smaller, portable hard drive or large externals to back up your files from home...
I wrote an article last month with my 2 cents about file protection here
http://robweber.wordpress.com/2009/11/25/fileprotection/
hope it helps!

| ->> I have used WD as well.. No problems. I will say that Debra is exactly right however and so is Jim. Find one that works for you... then buy two. |

->> I took Bert's advice (and a few others too) and purchased OWC. I love it! I bought the 500GB model. Love the fact that it can run off the computer without an external power source. Small, compact, and rugged. It hasn't let me down.
The only thing that I will say about OWC is that if you want to use an external HD to hook up to your video camera, OWC doesn't make a HD with the double 400 Firewire ports. My first ext HD was a Western Digital 320GB and it had the dual 400 firewire ports. Extremely handy for video work. I can use my OWC 500GB ext HD if I connect through my DVD burner which has two 400 firewire ports on the back of it. I'm sure there are other ways to connect too.
If you don't shoot video, no worries. OWC will cost a little more, but they are really reliable. Check out the reviews to see for yourself. I've never had a problem with it.
I've run into a few problems with my WD hard drive. NO fault of the maker. I had the WD plugged into the wall socket while I was working on a video project. The power went off in my apartment. Lost all of the video work that I had done. About 6 months worth of work. Luckily I was able to resurrect the video through a trick I learned on the web. But for 2 weeks I was hating life until I found a solution.
Another time I was showing photos to a client when his child tripped on my power cord and unplugged my WD hard drive's power source. Luckily the files did not get corrupted, but could have easily corrupted a file or two. Since my OWC HD runs off the computer instead of an AC outlet, I have had no worries. |

| ->> I just ordered a 1TB external hard drive from OWC based on this thread. A TB for $180 is pretty darn affordable. |
