IPhone vs Blackberry

->> I know I'm going to get alot of opinions on this, but did the people that purchased the IPhone buy it just because it was the newest and had great features?

Now that they have them, are they happy with the phone? I know a family that one of them has the original and the phone works great. The other 3 members of the family have the upgraded IPhone3 and it's always dropping calls.

I haven't heard a single complaint about the Blackberry. Are there any complaints about the Blackberry?

Please---help me decide which phone would you buy?

Thanks!!!

Email, text, 1600x1200px camera, Google maps and Twitter all in one.

I'd like to get an iPhone, but I'm on Verizon and not switching providers to get one.

I actually switched to Verizon a year ago, because my service was much, much better in county.

->> Personally, I prefer the BlackBerry over the iPhone. It's much more reliable...it's an email/text/business machine. Plus, if you hack it like I did mine, you can have all your iTunes on it, so it's essentially an iBerry. Granted, you don't have the "thousands of apps" available like the iPhone has, but really, when does anyone ever have the time to fully play with all that stuff? Bottom line: I couldn't get used to the the touchscreen. I like "feeling" the keys on a BlackBerry.

His Blackberry had the untidy habit of automatically dialing emergency services at random, sometimes three or four time in a row. Not good for his peace of mind! It also would erase his received text messages, also at random. Anecdotal stuff, sure, but enough to make him loathe the device.

My chief complaint about my iPhone regards moving images around on it, i.e. I can't update my member page here. How difficult could it be...?

Shortly after I bought it my employer bought me a Blackberry. Long story short I HATED the BB. I took it out of the box to set it up, used it for a few days and couldn't stand it.

My initial reluctance to go with the iPhone was the touch screen. However the BB Curve was impossible for me to type on. It was so frustrating I just gave it back.

My iPhone is a tool, not a toy and it blows the Blackberry away.

I know the touch surface is not for everyone but I've been able to type much faster on the iPhone than I have on other people's Blackberries or my previous phones. I guess it's something you just have to try and find out for yourself. I wasn't sure I'd be able to type quickly, but I can type fairly long emails now with relative quickness and ease with the iPhone.

I think the most important thing you can do in these situations is go into a store and fool around with the phones and determine if a touch surface if for you.

I’ve got a Apple Touch (iPhone without the phone) and a Blackberry 9700. The Touch is great for browsing, music and apps… Marginal at email, calendar and anything that requires typing.

Blackberry, great phone, email and calendar. OK on apps and MP3 player. Marginal but useable browser due to screen size Google Maps works great on the Blackberry.

Use Tetherberry and you can surf the internet on your laptop without paying extra.

->> I had a BlackBerry for two years. At first I hated it, it just didn't feel right being an Apple computer user. After a week, I fell in love with it and couldn't picture using anything else. E-mail was fast, typing was nice, browsing the Internet could have been better, but all in all, Verizon was great.

That was until I was surprised with an iPhone for Christmas. I really didn't want to switch from Verizon to AT&T, but had to do it.

So far my only complaint WAS not having push alerts. My BlackBerry alarmed me INSTANTLY when I got a new e-mail or alert from a social networking site.

I have since gone around that and gotten an ap to push me my mail instantly, so all is well.

Alas, I vote for the iPhone. It really is an all-in-one device that is great for finding info quickly and effectively on the go.

->> From the news reports I have read in the last couple of weeks, the Blackberry network has had 4 otutages (4 ?). I have had the same cell service and cell number since 1986 which is now AT&T.

Dropped calls and connection problems vary from region to region with all carriers. What might be good for AT&T in one region might be bad for another carrier in the same region. But over the 23 years I have found my service to be very consistent and satisfactory.

My iPhone came today. I like the fact that it just simply synchs up with everything across my .Mac Apple system. Simple.

->> I have a Blackberry Curve. When my old contract finished, I had the opportunity to switch over to ATT and get the Iphone, but I hear horror stories about ATT service in NYC, so I passed. I have and Ipod touch and I really like it. I download a ton of apps on it, but I see it more for entertainment and still have trouble typing fast on it. I can type really fast on my BB and find it to be perfect for my needs.

I do I have some issues with my BB though. It seems that it crashes every once in a while and takes a few minutes to reboot - that's just too long. Like previously mentioned, the Iphone has a ton more apps, but while most of them I couldn't care for, some of them would be nice.

The Iphone has a MUCH better browser than the BB. BB's browser completely sucks in my opinion. The Iphone has way better twitter and facebook apps as well.

My main concern would be dropping an Iphone. I tend to drop things. I know the Iphone doesn't stand a chance against a sidewalk, whereas my BB bests it all the time. So I'm pretty happy where I am right now.

My first phone was a bag phone and I was such an early customer I was able to pick my own number. I have also been with the same carrier since the beginning and they have morphed into AT&T.

I had a Blackberry for about three years before getting an iPhone. I love my iPhone for everything except as a phone. The BB worked much better as a phone and both were through AT&T. Regardless of the less than ideal phone signal strength, I would not go back to a BB for anything. All the other features are just too useful.

Wifi is very handy and if you own a mac the compatibility is perfect.

I live in an area where 3G isn't available yet, but the net is still pretty quick. AT&T coverage isn't as spread out as Verizon, as you probably know already having AT&T where you live.

I've owned blackberrys and they're not as awesome as the iPhone. Apps are cool, but for me, it's like owning a mini computer that makes calls as well.

And that the calls were dropping when the phone was trying to switch networks. They told me to try turning the 3G feature off which I did and I haven't had a dropped call since then. ->> I have had a BB Storm for about 12 months then my employer forced me to switch to the iPhone. The iPhone is superior with its speed, phone interface, web browsing and general media playback. However there are several features which the iPhone does not have which severely handicaps the device. Keep in mind that I have not jailbroken my device.

1. You cannot store attachments on the device. This prevents you from downloading a file from email on the iPhone, making changes, and then being able to email it back out. You can buy an app to do it($15) but the phone cannot do this by itself. The BB can.

2. You can only have 1 email address "push" to the phone. You can set the iPhone to "fetch" emails, but it kills the battery. BB can have multiple accounts.

3. You cannot personalize all alerts on the phone. Sure you can change your ringtone, but if you wanted to have a custom sound for text message and email you cant do it. You can use the preloaded sounds but where is the fun in that? Plus, there is now way to differentiate email accounts through alerts, by having a different sound for each account. BB can do this.

4. Battery life is awful. Battery life on all smart phones is awful. The only difference is you cant replace the battery on the iPhone.

5. You cannot run multiple apps at the same time. You can set push alerts but it kills the battery.

6. AT&T is completely unreliable.

For personal use I think the iPhone is a great device, but when you push it into the business world it does not have the mobile productivity that is necessary.

On an iPhone you can have multiple emails "pushed" to it.. I have three right now.. AT&T has always been very reliable for me.. I think reliable is a relative term based on where you live and how you use your phone. All my computers are Mac's so for me and my business world the iPhone integrates very well into it.
Now if AT&T would just get their tethering plan in order so I can update and upgrade my iPhone I'd be a very happy camper.

My wife bought me this iPhone 3Gs for xmas [AT&T who I was already with] and made me an appointment @ the apple store to pick it up and get it all set up for my business domain email accounts, hotmail account, TelNav etc.

Took less than 30 mins, out with the old and in with the new. This thing is great, wish I had switched over sooner.

The *only* complaint I have is the battery life seems very limited. But hey, I do so much on this thing I shouldn;t complain.

Whomever started the urban myth that the blackberry was for professionals and the iphone was for kids.... er,...... what a load of beans.

One of the reasons for the shortened battery life is dictated by what services you have turned on.
Pushing e-mails, wifi, surfing, etc., all consume power. When I started with the iPhone I was totally shocked with how often I had to charge it compared with the BB I formally used. Then I got clued in. Like you, I have the necessary chargers with me at all times. And if I don't need the other features I turn them off.

->> One keynote feature regarding the Blackberry being a "business" tool that has not been mentioned or that a lot of users are not aware of is that most companies have their employees' devices operating through a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). The BES is akin to a Microsoft Domain Controller in that it allows the IT Department to actively manage the devices much like a secured computing device (i.e. tablet, PC, laptop, etc.). Basically, you can route the Blackberry's web browsing back through the corporate web proxy (i.e. no more porn/gambling/hacker sites), push policies/controls to the smartphone, control attachment usage to the device, establish/create secure VPN tunnels, encrypt data, remotely disable the device, remotely control application installations, etc. Controlling any piece of equipment that is capable of carrying company sensitive data is what makes the Blackberry an attractive device in a corporate environment.

I personally own an iPod Touch 100% because of the AT&T network. I travel 38 weekends per year on the road with NASCAR. NASCAR's title sponsor is Sprint which basically means that non-Sprint users can experience limited coverage or congested networks come race day.

Aside from the BES functionality I mentioned above, I see absolutely no reason to own anything other than a Blackberry. Of course, having actual buttons to press is a personal preference. If you're struggling with the typing aspect of the touch interface on an iPhone/iPod Touch, I strongly recommend downloading/purchasing a typing tutor app that will get you accustomed to the touch interface and creating that muscle memory for learning the locations of characters.

This should read "iPhone" instead of "Blackberry." LOL - we're having this same debate at work, but ultimately we're going to gravitate to the iPhone to satisfy employee morale and also begin to move away from the seat licenses on the BES.
