Powering low watt strobes off computer UPS battery backups?

->> Has anyone ever used those UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) for computers to power smaller strobes (like Alien Bee 400w units) in the field? I know Vagabonds are quite affordable and are likely the best option so I'll probably buy a couple, but I ran into a guy today who said that for years he's used these fairly inexpensive ($70.00 - $100.00) UPS backups made by APC to power strobes "all day".
While I tend to doubt the "all day" claim, I likely wouldn't need them to last longer than a couple of hours for portrait sessions in the field or to power strobes at gyms with hard-to-access AC plugs. Maybe even just to have a couple stashed away in the trunk to back up the Vagabonds if needed.
If it works at all, would they recycle fast enough to shoot indoor sports? Is it safe to use with fairly inexpensive strobes? |

->> I have not heard of that but I will let you know when I get home this evening. I have 2 AB400 so sounds like the perfect test.
I am also shooting a basketball game tonight so if all goes well, I might be carrying along a UPS. |

| ->> Thanks Mike, just remember, if you smell smoke: stop, drop and roll... or something like that. ;-) |

| ->> One problem I can see with an UPS like I have, a Tripp-Lite, is that an audible alarm sounds when power is disconnected and repeats to warn you about it. Only way to turn it off is to hit a button on it each time it decides it needs to remind you again. I hate the noise during power failures though I guess that's the point. |
