->> You can rename and batch caption with Aperture during ingest, as well. Save yourself a step.

Keeping Photo Mechanic might come in handy for pre-selecting tagged photos on large takes, as Aperture doesn't recognize in-camera tagging. But besides that, keeping PM in your workflow would be redundant.

->> I use both, but for different purposes. I use Aperture for editing and archiving. I use Photomechanic for going through large numbers of images, fast. I usually browse from the card in PM, then copy the selects and and import them into Aperture library for editing. Then I ingest with PM. Afterwards, import the rest of the take only as referenced files. This is a good system if you have limitted internal hard drive space and can't have a balooning Aperture library with everything in it.

->> My current workflow is to ingest with PM with basic captioning info to a folder on my desktop and a folder on a external drive for backup. I then go through the folder on the desktop quickly getting rid of the junk, missed shots, anything obviously wrong shots. I take what is left and import those into Aperture for batch editing. If I do not need to caption any further I will either FTP them from Aperture or upload them to Photoshelter from Aperture, or if I do need to caption more and I have code replacement files, I will export the files out of Aperture and caption in PM, then FTP or send the images from PhotoMechanic. If Aperture got into code replacement, and did not have a library that balloons, I would not use PhotoMechanic at all.
