Snow Leopard?

->> I'm thinking of finally making the switch from 10.5 to 10.6. I wanted to wait until they got all the bugs out and it seems to have taken them a while. Are you guys still having any problems? Specifically with Aperture and its plug-ins, or Photoshop CS4?

Thanks

->> I've been using it for several months now. No problems with CS4 or Lightroom (don't use Aperture). All in all, I like it a lot. Finder and OS related tasks are faster and it uses less hard drive space (I got 10-15 gigs back depending on the computer). So it was a win - win for me.

Depending on what else you use, you may need to update some other apps. SpellCatcher, Toast, SuperDuper, Default Folder all needed to be updated to run with SL.

->> There is a bug in Snow Leopard that prevents "Check Spelling While Typing" from working in caption dialogs of Photo Mechanic (and other programs). The issue is on Apple's end and Camera Bits has filed a bug report but who knows when it will be fixed. There is also an issue with random Ingests being slow that Kirk is working hard to fix.

I've only updated one machine to 10.6 and these issues are keeping all my others on 10.5 for the time being.

->> Kevin,

I just got my new MacBook Pro and haven't installed PhotoShop CS4 yet (it's been ordered.) I was using CS2 on the old Mac -- migrated to the new mac -- and was surprised I could still use the CS2 (after I downloaded Rosetta.) Maybe I should wait on the CS4 for awhile if the CS2 is still functional.

I plan on calling Photo Mechanic/Camera Bits tomorrow to upgrade that software as well. I also need the newest plugin for Noise Ninja. Hopefully they will all play nice together.

->> No problems with Snow Leopard here. Works great with CS4, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, and now with CaptureOne Pro (there were some issues, but they seem to be better now).

->> When Snow Leopard originally came out (10.6), I installed it on one machine right away, and waited on my other to see how it performed (or didn't). There were a few issues with older software, which have been resolved (both by the newer 10.6.x releases and software updates by developers). Upgrading the OS made some software "think" it hadn't been registered, and I had to re-register some apps.

Photoshop CS4 works fine, but as it's not a 64-bit app, it doesn't take full advantage of the OS, so it still has a limit to how much memory it can address. Photo Mechanic had some minor issues too, but they have been, and are being addressed (the latest update being 4.6.2.2 beta 3 - working fine by me). Kirk is making sure it's as zippy as ever!

A few comments on Snow Leopard: it boots faster, closes down MUCH faster, and has a bunch of new smaller features - none earthshaking externally - but many very helpful. In particular, you can now Option-click (right click) one-handed by using a two-finger tap on the track-pad. I use that a lot.

Happy New Year to all!

- Ed.
