New to Mac/Photoshop

->> It's been a LONG time since I have used a Mac, so I consider myself to be a newbie. I recently purchased a used iMac, which is running OS 10.4 I believe. I installed an old version of Photoshop and the upgrade to 6.5.

When I first tried to install the software it said it would not work with 10.4 and that I needed OS 9 I believe. So I got that issue worked out and got the software loaded up.

It loads, but I can not see any of the menus on the top of the program such as File, View, etc.

Any idea how I can get these to load or did I install the software incorrectly? Thanks in advance for the help!

->> Are you running OS9???

if so, are you aware that you're running software that is over 10 years outdated?? That might be your problem there.

what I-mac did you get?? I need more info to help you.

->> Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of your computer and click on it. Click on where it says About this mac. If it says Power PC next to the Processor, you can use any version of Photoshop after 6 I think. If it says it is an Intel chip, you can still run older versions of Photoshop, but at a greatly reduced speed.

You'll need CS 3 or later to run at full speed on the Intel mac.

->> I'm not "running" OS 9. When I tried to load the program it said that I needed to use OS 9 that came with the OS 10 program to even get the photoshop to load. I have no idea what that means. I put in the OS 10 CD and ran as the instructions said and photoshop loaded fine once I did that.

I'm "running" OS 10.4.11.

It is a PowerPC G5.

And the program loads fine. I can use the short cut keys to open a document/create a new document/save etc. I just can't see the File, Edit, View, etc. menus at the top of the program :-(.

Thanks for the help! It is GREATLY appreciated.

->> Jason, is the white menu bar there at the top of the screen but the words aren't on it, or is the entire menu bar missing when Photoshop is open?

->> Just a guess, but try hitting the "F" key a couple of times. This cycles through different viewing options - one of which does turn off the top menu.

->> Did some searching around and found this mention on macosx.com:

The no-menubar thing is a known bug with Photoshop 6.x in Classic; it does not show up when booting to OS 9, only in OS X's Classic compatibility layer. If it crops up, and you need the menubar, quit Photoshop, restart Classic, and the second time it almost always works; if not, repeat. Inelegant, yes, but the only way.

Other suggestions you might try include repairing permissions -- applications>utilities>disk utility.

->> So how do you "restart" Classic? Sorry for the seemingly elementary question, but I have no idea how to accomplish that.

Also on the permissions what would I be looking to change/repair?

Thanks for the help!
