College WiFi won't allow FTP transfer of images?
Tim Vizer, Photographer

->> Earlier this summer at a soccer game, and just recently at basketball -- at the same college campus -- I couldn't use Filezilla to send images from those events via the school-provided Wi Fi network. Another photographer had the same problem at the soccer (he wasn't at the basketball game) and he and I came up with this theory which I'd like feedback on.

Is it possible that the school's computer system "sees" FTP image transfers much the same way as it would "see" a restricted peer-to-peer transfer of music or videos and block such a transmission? Or is there a much simpler explanation? Anyone have this problem? How'd you solve it?

the only way i could get around it at the time is using an aircard.

->> It's not uncommon for universities providing campus-wide wi-fi to block certain types of transmissions (generally done by blocking certain ports used by services like FTP). One local university has members of its IT staff help photographers get online from the press box prior to football games, and that generally involves creating a special login or installing some additional software that effectively opens up the ports needed for file transfer.

->> Like Samuel said, most universities restrict certain types of traffic over their free wifi. If you Google "Network Access Controller," you'll find that the IT Dept. can control the resources available to each computer that connects to their network rather comprehensively.

If you run into this into the future, I would recommend that you use a different transmission protocol such as HTTPS -- which is what Mac.com uses for your iDisk. HTTP/HTTPS would never be blocked.

Regarding your FTP blockage, the system doesn't see or allow/disallow certain types of files. Port 21 has been turned off thereby blocking any and all FTP access. Just ask the IT person or the SID to have the port opened and you will be able to transmit anything via FTP -- photos, audio clips, video, etc. They can then close the port after after the game.

Thanks everyone for your comments and Merry Christmas!

->> Ooops, couple more related followup items if you don't mind:

I will speak to the school SID/PR department about this issue and have them help me out with a workaround solution, whether it be the Port 21 angle that Doug Pizac mentions or Samuel's and/or Adam's ideas...maybe exploring the issue from a couple viewpoints will have the best outcome.

Also, in a sort of related issue, I have downloaded an iPhone app called "FTP On The Go" but haven't used it yet. Anyone tried that as a workaround in a dead zone area that has no WiFi or restricted WiFi?

Here's the url:
http://www.ftponthego.com/

As I read it, you use your iPhone and your laptop together to create a localized Ad Hoc WiFi network, then transfer the images from laptop to iPhone, and then send them FTP via the iPhone's cellular connection.

If I'm understanding this correctly, I think this app is ONLY for FTP transmitting....it does not enable you to have a continuous and direct (tethered) connection from the phone to the laptop for reading/writing email or viewing the internet. But if you know how to do those things, please share.

A problem right off the bat for me would be that I have the first version of the iPhone, with just the EDGE cell capability. My image transmissions would probably crawl along at a snail's pace. But I won the iPhone at the 2007 APPM seminar in D.C. so I can't complain since the price was right!

Again, thanks in advance everyone!

->> Tim,

Looking at your state of residence and putting 2 and 2 together, if it's the place I'm thinking of, you normally need a guest VPN account to enable FTP, and every time I've shot there over the past 4 years IT folks have been on scene to administer the passwords and user names. The good news is, once in, the speeds are pretty rapid.

I just noticed The Guide could use an update for the school of which I am speaking. Note to self to do this.
