| ->> Does anyone know the specific settings to use in Final Cut Pro for 5D video? I've scoured the web for an answer and no one seems to say the same thing. |

Adam, What i and some people in my class have figured out is that if you drag 5d video onto the time line (before everything else audio, photos...) the FCP asks you if you would it to convert to the correct setting. I just click yes, and it works every time. I do not think that FCP has a preset for the 5d mark2 yet in the easy setup menu. Ive produced about 8 video like this and they look great. Other than that, you can compress the video to Pro Res 422 ahead of time (instead of exporting it this way out of FCP) and that seems to help. When i export out of FC, i use pro res 1920x 1080 30p. I have a copy of that compressor if you want it. we have done a lot of trial and error with the camera in the last class i had. feel free to email me or call me if you have more questions, i might be able to explain it better. Good luck.

| ->> FWIW Kohl - Final Cut Pro is the editing tool within Final Cut Studio. And besides, the workflow that Phillip is demonstrating doesn't require either of those things. He uses (as well as I do) MPeg Streamclip to make the conversions prior to editing. It works well. |

->> Thanks Kohl, Robert, Jason and Ray! I guess that was an inadvertent confession that I don't check the homepage as often as I should, Robert...
I've produced several short videos for the News Sentinel using iMovie and sometimes FCP, but I've never had the same experience with each FCP production. Keep posted. I'm working on a project that should be out in a week or so.
Peace and Merry Christmas.

->> Adam,
Khol and Jason (via Phillips video) are both correct. You should try them both and see which one works best for you. Typically, deadline will dictate which option you use. Converting clips prior to editing takes an enormous amount of time and hard drive space, especially if you have a lot of footage. But it certainly is easier to edit. I mostly use the method Khol describes but recently created my own preset.

MPEG streamclip did the trick. Thanks again. |

->> Update:
If anyone is interested here is the multimedia piece I produced for the Knoxville News Sentinel. The majority of the footage and stills were shot on my Canon 5DMK2 but the interior wide angle video at the beginning was shot using the paper's Nikon D90 with a 10.5mm lens on a suction cup mount.

Thoughts and feedback are appreciated.
Hope you all had a good Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year.
peace.

->> According to info on DVinfo.net, I have been converting using MPEG to Apple XDCAM 1080P 30P
It doesn't swell the file like Apple Pro Res does, and it makes a fine clip, it does compress, but I don't know if it is lossless or not, I doubt it. But it makes the editing in FCP a littlefaster when you don't have such a big file. Make sure to deselect the interlace options since it is a progressive scan file. |
